Veiled Kingdom, by Carmen Bin Laden

On September 11th 2001, Carmen Bin Ladin heard the news on the radio that the Twin Towers had been struck. She instinctively knew that her brother-in-law was involved in these horrifying acts of terrorism, and her heart went out to America. She also knew that her life and the lives of her family would never be the same again. In 1974 Carmen, half Swiss and half Persian, married into the Bin Laden family and found herself inside a complex and vast clan, part of a society that at that point she neither knew nor understood. Determined to protect her daughters from the inevitable restrictions within a society riddled with hypocrisy and contradiction, in 1985 Carmen moved back to her home country, Switzerland. Carmen's story takes us inside one of the most powerful, secretive and repressive kingdoms in the world and the Bin Laden family's role within it, and she is one of the few women to have acquired, through her husband, intimate knowledge of the inner workings of this society.

Educational Quick Read
By E. Knowles
I picked this book up in the airport with the expectation of learning more about the Bin Laden family. I had always read that Osama had an enormous extended family but had never known much more. Carmen Bin Ladin focuses on the struggles that Saudi women are faced with while telling her story of life as a Bin Laden in Saudi Arabia in the late 70's. I recommed this autobiography to those who are just beginning to explore the topic of Muslim practices and Saudi Arabia.

saudi bin Laden family 1990s
By William Garrison Jr.
The author lived with her divorced Persian mother in Switzerland. The author met her husband, Yeslam bin Ladin (Laden is the extended family name), who was a younger brother of Osama bin Laden. Her courtship extended between Europe and California, where both went to college. With the extended family wealth, they lived in Saudi Arabia, but took frequent trips to Europe and America. While in S.A., she detailed her experiences while living in wearing the Chador cloak, and the problems of not being able to drive a car, nor could she even walk across the street from her house to her cousin's house alone - she had to have a male companion. She details not being able to visit a cinema, go swimming, no concerts - a restricted, boring `lassitude' lifestyle for women. She never saw one of her many (40) sisters-in-law read a book. She had a tennis court built so that she could play tennis, but she had to have the tennis rackets imported through diplomatic bags - so that the customs officials could not confiscate them. She learned that both Saudi men and hired male servants would not listen to her commands - she had to find some male relative to give instructions. She noted the time that when a young Saudi female refused to marry a prince, she tried to flee the county, but was captured and shot (p. 107). She met Osama only a couple of times, and talked with him only very briefly - but she saw his hatred towards the `West.' She did the lesser umra pilgrimage to the Kaaba. As she bore only daughters, her marriage crumbled, he was ignoring her, and she finally caught him `dating' another woman. She sought a divorce in Europe, but as her husband disputed it - the divorce proceedings barley crawled through the European court system. Not until after the 9/11/2001 New York Twin Towers attack, was the author able to finally convince a European judge to grant her a divorce - from the bin Laden family. She was able to keep her daughters in New York City, rather than allowing her ex entice them to return to Saudi Arabia and keep her from seeing them. As dancing was forbidden, she took her daughters to Europe to learn social dancing. Maids ironed on the carpet, rather than getting an ironing board. Other families would not allow their maids to sit on the coaches. Carmen discusses Saudi customs, but doesn't explain their tie-ins to the hadith; observances, but no serious religious analysis. Not a deep, detailed study of Saudi life (dolls were faceless, foreigners couldn't buy property, the bin Laden's were the only ones with detailed maps of Mecca, how the Saudi schools taught children to hate Jews), but interesting in learning Carmen's views of living inside the extended bin Laden family.

inside the veiled kingdom
By Linda Umstead
An insight into the mysterious Saudi kingdom, which tourists cannot visit without a written invitation. Carmen bin Laden married the brother of Osama (one of some 20 or so siblings) and found to her dismay that she became a virtual prisoner there, completely at the mercy of her husband's family. Born and raised in Switzerland and a completely western woman, the shocking discovery of her new status occurred upon her arrival in Saudi Arabia for her wedding. Her battle to remain a free woman and raise her daughters in the western way, her story is riveting.

Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher lead an ordered sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine. And from the moment a freak accident brings Candido and Delaney into intimate contact, these four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding.

Boyle's latest concerns two couples in Southern California?one a pair of wealthy suburbanites, the other illegal immigrants from Mexico.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Go tell it in the valley: Boyle's newest novel is, according to the publicist, "a timely, provocative account" of immigration in central California. With a 100,000-copy first printing and a 25-city tour, you know the publisher expects this book to be big.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
PEN/Faulkner award winner and author of various novels, including The Road to Wellville (1993), Boyle avoids any potential pitfall of his prior achievement by veering in another direction and seriously examining social and political issues in this timely novel. He establishes an obvious dichotomy by interweaving the scrapping, makeshift, in-the-present lives of illegal aliens Ca{ }ndido and Ame{‚}rica Rinco{¢}n with the politically correct, suburban, plan-for-the-future existence of wealthy Americans Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher. The Rinco{¢}ns' lives, though full of fear and hardship, contain far more passion and endurance than the Mossbachers' mundane and materialistic lifestyles. An initial, pivotal car accident briefly unites, and ultimately separates, Delaney and Ca{ }ndido, provoking question after question concerning immigration, unemployment, discrimination, and social responsibility. Surprisingly, Boyle manages to address these issues in a nonjudgmental fashion, depicting the vast inequity in these parallel existences. This highly engaging story subtly plays on our consciences, forcing us to form, confirm, or dispute social, political, and moral viewpoints. This is a profound and tragic tale, one that exposes not only a failed American Dream, but a failing America. Janet St. John

Exaggerated but true
By Doug Vaughn
Boyle's The Tortillia Curtain differs from other books of his that I have read in that it tackles a serious set of social issues head on. Among the other reviews posted here for this book I see that some have claimed that the book is 'unrealistic' and makes use of every stereotype imaginable. Well, while one wouldn't want to pretend that all Southern Californians of means are shallow conspicuous consumers, nothing in the portrait Boyle creates here rings untrue. There must be thousands of people who fit this image. That being the case, it is important to make the point that he doesn't present either the Yuppie Californian family or the Mexican immagrant family as a symbol. They are real people. They don't stand for anything else. And while the extreme dichotomy posed between the wealth and well being of the one and the poverty and marginal health of the other do serve the purpose of highlighting the issue of the extreme inequities in the distribution of goods and services in this country, Boyle does not suggest a solution. Rather, he is interested in showing us what happens when these extremes come into contact in unexpected circumstances. What he has given us is a story of people in different circumstances responding as they likely would - as their training and experience have prepared them to. If we want to make an allegory of it, I don't think that is what he intended. I think that all he is saying is that extremes of expectation, in conflict, will generate extremes of behavior.
I enjoyed the book very much. Apart from Boyle's considerable skill with words, his characters were vivid and the plot - though heavy on coincidence (hey, it worked for Dickens) - is interesting and keeps the reader focused till the end.

Deserves 6 stars!
By Nancy R. Katz
While reading House of Sand and Fog earlier this year, I was reminded of another book to read called The Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle. Friends of mine who live in Southern California had recommended this book to me for sometime and shortly after I finished the Dubus book, I picked up Tortilla Curtain. Now that I've read both of these books I can't stop thinking about both of them, their stories, the characters or unbeliveable outcomes. And if I were to give House of Sand and Fog a 5 star rating, I would surely give 6 stars to The Tortilla Curtain.
Tortilla Curtain is the phrase used to describe the thin borders between Mexico and the United States which immigrants cross over in their attempt to live better lives. In this "blow you away novel," TC Boyle offers his readers a plot and characters who are not only involved in the world of illegal aliens but whose lives will never be the same. And for many of us it is as if this novel's premise was lifted off the pages of our daily newspapers and one for which there is no easy solution.
Candido along with his wife America are illegal aliens living in the canyons and brush areas of Southern California. When the book opens Candido is hit by a car driven by Delaney a writer for an environmental magazine. Although Candido hurries away from the scene for for fear of being caught and questioned his injuries prevent him from working for the next few days. In eloquent words, the author then describes how America seeks work and is both verbally and physically abused which causes Candido great regrets about crossing the border and bringing America to the US.
At the same time nearby in a prosperous planned community, Delaney lives with his wife Kyra, a real estate broker, and her son. The residents of this community are hounded by intruding coyotes in their backyards as well as suspected illegal aliens who rob their homes. Plans are underway to erect a large fence which should keep out all intruders except that Delaney voices his concerns about the fence wondering if the residents aren't locking themselves into their fancy homes. But as the novel continues the people of this community only become more and more incensed and Delaney's words fall on deaf ears Soon enough, though, and after a series of events, Delaney, begins to feel differently about the fence. Even when he knows the truth, he finally becomes out of control concerning any and all who cross the borders illegally. And then one day Candido and Delaney finally meet up again, in what has to be one of the most gripping and stunning conclusions of any book.
We read this book through chapters told in the alternating voices of Candido and Delaney until their two voices are ultimately linked together as one struggles against his better judgement and the other struggles to maintain his dignity.
This is a powerful and masterful book which describes lives spiraling out of control and should have every reader asking themselves what they would do when faced with similar circumstances.

The "Gating" of the American heart, mind and soul examined.
By David J. Gannon
As is the norm for Boyle, this is a very complex work.
The gist of this novel emerges right from the start. Delaney Mossbacher is driving home to his pristine gated community in Southern California and hits a Mexican immigrant walking along the road. His reaction? Concern that he might have seriously damaged his car. Oh, he does "come to his senses" and check on the man he hit. The man is obviously injured. What does Delaney do? Gives him 20 bucks and leaves.
Ok, so Delaney is just a lousy jerk-a bad guy with no conscience, right? Not exactly, at least from Delaney's point of view. A left wing "naturalist" type, Delaney is the perfect parody of the "Socially and Environmentally" conscious Yuppie urban American. He's the sort with "important" cares. That he has hit and injured a human being gives him but passing concern-that his dog can be killed by wild animals in his own yard is an outrage.
This world view is counter posed against that of the accident victim, Candido and his young wife, illegal immigrants living in the ravine behind the Delaney's gated community. Candido and his wife struggle with how to find even one decent meal a day. Kyra, Delaney's wife, struggles with the escalating emptiness and lack of fulfillment she feels from closing 6 figure commission deals on her sales of multimillion dollar homes. And so it goes.
At heart, this is a book about how people are desperate to connect with one another while systematically shutting themselves away from everyone. The Delaney's spend their lives shutting themselves away behind an array of both actual and metaphorical walls. Candido and his wife are shut away by poverty and fear and racism.
Boyle is a craftsman with words, and he definitely knows how to construct a well-designed story. I appreciate his work but I can't really say I like it. On the one hand, his characters too often strike me as too much a caricature-complex and well developed caricatures, to be sure, but not characters one can empathize with. In this case, neither of the Delaney's amount to what I would call a genuine character, they are both come across caricatures developed to represent a wide swath of American stereotypes rather than as real people. This is sad, as their counter points-Candido and his wife, are just the opposite. They may "represent" an immigrant stereotype, yet are developed a real characters. On the other hand, there seems to me to be something oppressive about Boyle's style-I always feel like I have an anvil on my shoulders when I read his books. I suppose some would interpret it as a sense of "suspense", but it feels different to me, more like you are carrying the weight of all the points he wants to make all throughout the reading experience.
Interestingly, I still come back to Boyle. His books weigh on me, but I can't seem to walk away from him. I may not like them, but I do appreciate them, and they seem to have a power to attract. It's all very odd, yet compelling.
I say give him a try and see what your reaction is.

Great For the Intermediate Artist
By Nneka Gunn
[[VIDEOID:4aa8854a079bc8977d3e025f95f4a81a]]I found this book to be great for those that have some basic knowledge in the art realm. Not for the beginners, but will greatly assist those who love drawing characters for fun or even graphic artist. I'm not an artist by no means, but I did want to spruce up my artistic abilities for some sketches for a prototype (clothing). How to Draw Awesome Figures put everything in perspective as far as proportions go. I also found the step-by-step teachings to be very helpful. The layering technique helps a lot in building characters (both male and female). It goes in depth and breaks down the importance of knowing basic anatomy when drawing figures. So detailed that the chapter on muscles are color coded for better understanding and comprehension for application.

I'm getting there and I know with much practice and this book, I'll be right where I need to be. I recommend this book to those who are seeking to hone their craft as an artist.

Great resource for learning body proportions and different poses!
By TimmiLatte
If you are looking to improve the look of your characters, making them proportionally more appealing, then this is the book for you. It has taught me many things I wanted to learn, and a few things I never knew I needed to learn. I have only had this book for a short time, but already I can see a marked improvement in my drawings as my understanding of how the human body looks and moves has improved.

It doesn't cover how to draw the different parts of the body, but it explains from the outset that it only intends to cover the figure (proportions, poses, etc) so it does its job well. I felt that the teaching style is clear and concise, in much the same way as Neil's art video courses are.

Highly Recommended

Neil has done a superb job at pinpointing all the details that are required knowledge and not bogging us down with unnecessary parts of the anatomy. It's a very easy book to read and simply easy to follow directions. This book is a great start to getting hands on experience drawing the figure from memory. The most useful book I have read on this topic.
By Roman Lundin
Love this book. I am an electrical engineer. This self help book is very well written and potentially will save you handreds and perhaps many thousands of $$. It is clear and easy to understand. Competent professional advice in just sufficient detail to help you properly complete your project of becoming disaster-proof. Imagine what can happen during a freezing winter with your house pipes if your electrical power goes off for a day? What are the restoration costs of a flooded unfrozen house? The areas of this book that I liked most are the quick selection checklist with author's pics, the generator comparison examples, and the description of common mistakes commited by some other home generator selection guides. Overall impression: this is the most useful book I have read on this topic.

Thanks to the author for saving me $9000!
By P. Creel
EXCELLENT guide! Lots of details. Written for the layman. "Professionals" at Generac insisted that I needed a 22 kW system that would cost over $10,000. After doing the calculations from this guide (including the load balancing test) I have a 8750 kW system running off natural gas that powers only what I need to run (including my 4 ton AC) for a total cost of $1200.

Discover the DC Silver Age
By Michael J. Frasher
The modern cover of the Supergirl Archive Edition did not do justice to the virtual treasure trove of Silver Age DC Comics art and masterful story telling found in this edition. Buying this book is like purchasing an imitation painting and finding a masterpiece under the surface. Guess you can tell, I like it!
If you are not familiar with DC Archive editions, Supergirl is a great one to start with. DC has done a fantastic job in providing a quality hardbound collection of the world's greatest comics at a very low price. You could spend thousands of dollars to purchase these comics, if you could find them. The reader must prepare for a time trip back to nearly forty plus years ago in comic story telling. Remember these stories came out in the late 50's and have a completely different flavor compared to the new age of comic story telling.
Find out how a teenage Supergirl survived the destruction of the planet Krypton! Discover Argo City! Find out how Superman is related to Supergirl! Where did Supergirl's costume originate? Why did Supergirl come to Earth? How do you deal with being a normal teenager on Krypton, to one of the most powerful beings on Earth? What kind of pet would a Supergirl have? How did the pet get super powers?
This is a great book to purchase for your children, girlfriend, significant other or just treat yourself. It shows how a teenager from Krypton can be attractive, intelligent, resourceful and a great role model. If you have never experienced silver age Supergirl stories, you are in for a real treat.

These old stories are fun, but a little weird
By DJ Joe Sixpack
This first volume of adventures featuring the original, Silver Age Supergirl have plenty of fun moments, and that goofy, don't-take-it-too-seriously quality that makes the old DC books so enjoyable. There are some problems, though...

I got this volume because I was looking for superhero "girl" role models for my daughter to enjoy, and while I appreciate the relatively nonviolent nature of the Supergirl stories, I did have problems with the underlying sexism of the series. For many months in the early episodes, Supergirl was hamstrung by her bossy older cousin, Superman, who tucks her away in an orphanage and tells her never to go out in public and use her powers. Now, this isn't to protect her from harm -- no, it's so that he can use her as a "secret weapon" against crime, a backup superheroine who will blow the minds of criminals when she's finally let out of the box. Thus, most of the early stories revolve around endless clumsy and utterly unnecessary plot devices employed so that Supergirl can sneak out and break her super-curfew. The only real reason for the character to be neutered this way is because the editors just weren't ready to have a "girl" be as strong as Superman; surely they could have come up with *some* way to make the stories more interesting without playing the same old hiding-her-true-identity trick over and over again. Still, even with the silly restrictions, Supergirl had her fun, and these late-vintage Silver Age stories are way more engaging than the sluggish super-comics of the '40s, and far less dark than the stuff we've been reading since the 1980s. In short, this era and these stories are an ideal introduction for newer, younger, more innocent comicbook readers. Definitely recommended. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

Kara Zor-El takes the stage
By Zack Davisson
"Supergirl Archives Vol. 1" collects the Supergirl back-up stories from Action Comics #252-268. It also includes the Supergirl "try-out" issue from Action Comics #123, where Jimmy Olsen wishes up a "Super-Girl" companion for his buddy Superman. It all ends badly of course, but paves the way for Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El to arrive in a rocket 8 months later.
In these early issues, Supergirl is hidden away from the public. She is Superman's secret weapon and spends most of her time maintaining her secret identity of orphan Linda Danvers. Eventually, she goes to the future to meet the Legion of Super-Heroes and Tommy Tomorrow. Her pet, Streaky the Supercat shows up as well.
The stories, written mainly by Otto Binder of Marvel Family fame, showcase the beginning of what would become the Superman Family. Soon Comet the Superhorse, Beppo the Supermonky and the entire bottle city of Kandor would be roaming around with "The Last Son of Krypton." There is a charming innocence in the stories, and they are very well crafted silver age comics. The art, by Jim Mooney and Al Plastino, is suiting to the stories. The new Frank Miller cover is a nice addition, although an odd choice as he is not an artist one associates with the character of Supergirl.
