My favorite part from success was learning on the good habit for productivity. A must-read for the Lupus community

I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.

But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.

However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not.

I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.

AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK!!! My husband and I each have our own bookmarks init as he reads anything that I put in front of him that has to do with my illnesses, medicines and treatments...I am straddling @ 35 meds/day and 10 auto-immune disorders. I also just ordered this book today for my Parents. EVERYONE with Lupus or any of the other many associated auto immune diseases / disorders should have to read and use as a reference. I brought into my Rheumatologist's when I went in for my Rituxan treatment. They LOVED it and were going to order 1 or 2 to have onsite for patients to use / read while they where there getting any of their numerous treatments. Also, this book is VERY inexpensive for being a 900 page book...unbelievable! I pre-ordered mine in February 2014 and finally received in June 2014...WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!

AMAZING amount of INFO about LUPUS

If you or someone you love has lupus, this is a great book to have on hand to read and study the disease as well as to have around to use as a reference tool any time you get new symptoms and want to look something up. I've been able to help answer lupus questions or concerns a couple of times already and I've only had it a couple of weeks. Here is a photo of one serious topic so you can see his style of writing. He gives an enormous amount of information written in an easy to understand style, yet still in great detail. This book could be used by your doctors as a reference book.

If you love audiobooks, you MUST check this out!

This audiobook has so much more than I would have first thought. There is such variety in general in content that was thought provoking as well as inspiring and it is presented in a way that, at least for me, I was inspired and encouraged to do more and to be more. This audio book was something that let me think deeper about my own journey as well as about my relationships with others. I also was able to think about the future and where I want to see myself going personally and professionally. This was the perfect audiobook for me at this point in my life as I am reassessing my priorities and seeing where I want to focus next. If you love audiobooks, you MUST check this out!

Great (Though Not As Compelling as What I Know For Sure)

It's been almost a year since I listened to and loved Oprah Winfrey's What I Know For Sure. So having loved that audiobook and having been a longtime subscriber to O Magazine, I was thrilled when the latest audiobook from the Oprah empire found its way in my mailbox.

I admit, it took me quite so time to sit down and listen to this audiobook because I had a feeling it wouldn't live up to my expectations. And...well, there are two sides to this coin. One on side, I really enjoyed the stories being told here, the lessons being learned here, and so on. There are so many different journeys from so many diverse lives in these stories about loss and survival, being vulnerable and accepting help, taking chances and embracing the unknown. Saying yes. I really appreciate the fact that some of the most touching life lessons from O Magazine contributors can be found in one place. That in itself is something to be very happy about.

What's great about this is that it's more reflection, more insight and inspiration than it is a traditional self help book filled with direction and advice and facts and not a whole lot of substance or depth. So, I really liked the structure of the essays. They were each so distinct and each left their mark and it never felt preachy. I loved how most of these essays are simply about how these people found happiness, what the turning point was for them in their search for joy. It's quite something to see the turning points in other people's lives. The human experience is something else. In all of this, there was an overall theme of optimism and joy and open arms and gratitude. An overall sense of peace. Even in all of the mess that life throws at us. I loved that overall theme of relinquishing control and enjoying the adventures of life or learning to appreciate and shape and extend our place in this world. I especially loved "Book Lust" by Pamela Erens and "Stop Whining" by Roxane Gay.

Now on the other side, I didn't quite connect with the audiobook as much as I had hoped. Narrated by five people, I only found two of the voices to be extremely compelling, two to at least hold my attention, and one to be quite frankly...boring. So if you're on a road trip and looking for a more serene listening experience, this is perfect. Go with the audiobook format and sit with this for three hours. Otherwise, I think this is much better suited consuming as a coffee table book and I'll stick to The Moth for more insight and inspiration through the spoken word. But because I am such a fan of the Oprah empire, you know I am definitely looking forward to whatever is released next!

Immensely valuable.

I recently started law school myself at the age of 37. A few months before I did so, I took reviewer Richard King's advice (below) and bought this Companion. It is indeed everything he describes.

Not only will the articles provide solid, helpful overviews on specific topics, but the bibliographies will lead the reader on to other works on specific topics. This one is a keeper.

Although parts of it will be easier to read for those with some background in philosophy, such a background is not strictly necessary. And the essays on introductory topics (torts, contracts, property, etc.) may serve the intelligent student as well as a shelf-full of "Nutshell" volumes.

This volume will also be of interest to readers who are already involved in the philosophy of law; a number of the articles herein were written by well-known names in the field (e.g. Jules Coleman, Ernest Weinrib) and can't be found elsewhere.

And if you're just now introducing yourself to a particular field of legal theory -- law and economics, say, or legal formalism -- the introductions in this volume are worth reading _before_ picking up specific books on the topic in question. You'll be better equipped to read even, say, Mercuro/Medema's excellent _Economics and the Law_ or Weinrib's also excellent _The Idea of Private Law_ after reading the overviews presented here.

Admirably fills a void in legal education

The editor's goal in assembling this Companion was to make the philosophy of law accessible and interesting to the non-specialist. He states that he wanted to publish a text that introduces law students to the theoretical underpinnings of the law. He has succeeded admirably in reaching his goal. It is unfortunately the case that most law schools in the United States fail to introduce law students to the philosophy of law-such courses are usually elective, and most students take only courses that will help them pass the bar or assist them in their jobs. As a result, many American lawyers have only a superficial understanding of our legal system-they lack an understanding of the nature and functions of law that would not only enrich their lives, but that would also prepare them to make more meaningful contributions to the profession and to society. The Blackwell Companion can fill this void in law school curriculum, and it should be required reading for all law school students. Moreover, the approachable nature of the Companion should prove inviting to the undergraduate. It may even encourage students that are interested in the nature and functions of law to attend law school-an institution that is often the haven of those that are only interested in pursuing or preserving money and prestige. Highly recommended.

Thank God He Wrote This

The diversity and varying depth of legal theories and critical perspectives created a clear need for this book. Its structure is compartmentalized, and complements its breadth of vision. The various articles, written by leading scholars, are aimed at the introductory level. The achievement is comprehensibility - no advanced degree required. The superior quality of the articles cannot be understated.

(Paperback edition) The paper is of acceptable but lower grade quality. The text font is readable but left me with the impression that the publishing company used an old IBM Selectric typewriter.

About the Author
Carl Kirschner is Professor of Spanish and Dean of Rutgers College. Formerly Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers, he has taught courses in linguistics (syntax and semantics), sociolinguistics and bilingualism, and second language acquisition. Professor Kirschner received his Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts. He has published a book on Spanish semantics and numerous articles on Spanish syntax, semantics, and bilingualism, and edited a volume on Romance linguistics.

Mary Lee Bretz is Professor Emerita of Spanish and former Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University. Professor Bretz received her Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Maryland. She has published numerous books and articles on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish literature and on the application of contemporary literary theory to the study and teaching of Hispanic literature.

Rodney Bransdorfer received his Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has taught at Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Gustavus Adolphus College. He is currently Professor of Spanish at Central Washington University. He has presented papers at national conferences such as AATSP and AAAL. In addition to his work on the Pasajes series, he has authored or co-authored several other McGraw-Hill titles including: ¡Avance!, Second Edition (2008), ¿Qué te parece?, Third Edition (2005), the instructor's annotations for Nuevos Destinos: Spanish in Review (1998), and the instructor's annotations for Destinos: Alternate Edition (1997).

Trisha Dvorak is Senior Program Manager with Educational Outreach at the University of Washington. She has coordinated elementary language programs in Spanish and taught courses in Spanish language and foreign language methodology. Professor Dvorak received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She has published books and articles on aspects of foreign language learning and teaching and is co-author of Composición: Proceso y síntesis, a writing text for third year college students.

One of the Best!

If you are learning Spanish, this is the ultimate for intermediate level.
It provides comprehensive grammer in 1 book with several excercises that have answers within the book. This is a comparable college-level text to the detail of those books handed out in high-school.

Not only does this text cover all the basic grammer and vocabulary of Spanish, but also details of when to use what vocabulary in specific situations (Oyo! Sections), and how the grammer can change depending on the context (preterite vs. imperfect, subjunctive, passive "se" vs. other uses for "se", how prepositions modify verb meaning, i.e. "pensar de" vs. "pensar en").

What makes this such an excellent tool for Spanish is emphasizing the conjugations of verbs and the context in which to use them. It is presented in a simplistic, logical format (another textbook that I use for a Spanish class is using a terrible book that makes it difficult to parse out the grammer sections and has no answers to the exercises).

In addition to vocabulary & grammer, there is a section in the back (one of the Appendices) that covers pronunciation & linguistics to prepare the student for further study in Spanish. Also, the online exercises are excellent and cover both vocabulary and grammer in a comprehensive manner.

One can use this textbook to learn by themselves,or with the aid of a professor. I would suggest this book for anyone trying to learn Spanish. It will provide the kind of solid basis that a student needs to have for further study (300-level and beyond) as well as preparation for an interactive experience (Study Abroad).

The book is very well organized, but all of their examples are a little wonky. I was surprised to see that there was no online edition seeing as all other spanish books used in this school have an online edition with little tricks and helping videos.
