Still works after all these years

I had my colors analyzed at summer camp, way back in the 1980's, using this book. Almost twenty years later, I still have the color swatches, and still rely on them for choosing what shades to wear.

The book gives the information. Unfortunately, printing methods don't show the dramatic differences that holding the fabric sheets under a person's face does, as we did back in summer camp.

I've seen (and agree with) the complaints here from women of color that this book doesn't meet their needs. I'd suggest "Women of Color" by Darlene Mathis as an alternate resource. It applies the seasonal system with darker skinned women in mind. Carol Jackson, who wrote this book, wrote an introduction to "Women of Color," where she admitted the shortcomings in her book, and endorsed the new book as taking the next, needed step.

Refreshing, to see an author recognize and endorse another author's correction for their own book's shortcomings.

Pleasantly Surprised

I was quite skeptical that a book which has been in print so long would contain up-to-date information that I could use. Not only does it contain sensible advice on dressing and accessorizing, I learned that I've never worn the correct make-up colors. In a couple of days, with simple modifications in make-up and dressing, I feel I look much better. Not so simple was determining my correct "season". With just the book that is a bit tricky, but I can tell that I did get it right. A surprising little gem.

A good book made bad with horrible DRM restrictions.

Watch Out!

The book uses some strange 3rd party PDF encryption to protect the book. I'm fine with that. However, I could not get Acrobat to open the book under Windows 7.

Installing the book on an old Windows XP machine worked. However, now I want to install MY Book (can you hear me Industrial Press Reference Library? - this is "MY" book) on my new Windows 8 laptop. The reason I cannot is because MY order ID has already been used (when I installed it on an old machine). So, I guess, I can only install this once!!! Crazy. This must not be true. So I just called customer support but it's Friday afternoon and they close at 4 for the weekend! Nice. So I gotta wait until Monday so that I can ask pretty please, can I please install MY book on a second machine.

If I had only known this book was so crippled with DRM (digital-rights-management) I would not have bought it.

Excellent advanced book on CNC Programming topics

This handbook by Smid on the subject of CNC programming tackles the subject from a different angle than his bestselling "CNC Programming Handbook". That book is a more basic one aimed at beginners. This book is more advanced and contains several programming subjects that are very difficult to find either in other books or on the web. Even where there is overlap with the author's "CNC Programming Guide", this book provides much more depth of coverage on various subjects than that book does. As is standard with this author, this book includes many clear detailed drawings that greatly assist in visualizing the procedures covered. Whenever applicable, a complete programming example is provided. Equations and all tools used in each example are boxed and clearly labeled. Peter Smid has not only the depth of knowledge on CNC programming but also has perfected to technique of explaining it in a well organised and easily readable book. If you are learning CNC programming, or are well versed in the subject this book should be on your shelf as a tutorial or as a reference item. In fact I have purchased other books by the same author and they all have content that I have found very useful. I refer to them frequently.
Easy to follow, full of detail and easy to use as a quick reference book.

A thought provoking and engaging book

I read this book knowing nothing about its authors; after reading it I have subscribed to James Dale Davidson's financial newsletter! In a world that appears to have gone mad with fear and self-doubt, Davidson and Rees-Mogg provide a grand theory that explains why the world is the way it is in general. What they call "megapolitics" helps to explain how technological innovation drives not only the economy but also international relations. This book challenged my understanding of the internet by showing how advanced telecommunications changes the fundamental relation between the individual and the state. Even if you do not agree with Davidson and Rees-Mogg's theory, the bibliography of this book is so well researched that it alone justifies the purchase. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased a copy for my family to read. A "must read" hardly does this book justice.

Cyberpunk future

This is a very interesting book with disturbing implications: the authors contend that, in our lifetimes we will see the messy demise of nation states, with the most advanced of the Western democracies falling the farthest and hardest. The grim future they depict is essentially that of Stephenson's "Snow Crash" or Gibson's "Neuromancer".

In making their case, the authors draw an interesting and convincing parallel between today's concepts of patriotism and national duty, and the Church in late medieval Europe.

I'd fault the book for its hyped up rhetoric and excessive repetition of the same historical factoids. Also, the dire predictions of this 1997 book are somewhat undermined by the predictions of the scope of the Y2K computer failures, and also by the odd depiction of Peruvian ex-dictator Fujimori as the wave of the future.

I've read all of the books by Davidson and Rees-Mogg, and was pleasantly surprised by their latest effort. The thing that's particularly inspiring about this book is the opportunity to consider futures that are not promoted by typical pundits and "experts." It's refreshing to be able to not only have an alternate view, but also to be able to review the research that has gone into the analysis, which enables one to see how the model being presented was developed. Even if reality does not show up exactly as presented, it's certainly thought-provoking.

Oh, so that's what happened to Joey Bishop

Mr. Starr should be complemented for taking the time to write a book about a comedian that has been long forgotten. I would have preferred a longer book but perhaps Mr. Starr was afraid of being redundant. One reason that the book is not longer, I assume, is that Joey's career does not really lend itself to a study of a body of work.

Joey--when he was at his best--had the ability to snap a very witty one-liner. However, while not stated in Mr. Starr's book--I believe that Joey's real downfall was the laziness he exhibited on his late-night talk show. He never really took the time to do a monologue or prepare any post-monologue comedy bit. Instead, he let Regis share the opening spot with him and then he went right to his guests. That would never sell today and it didn't sell in the sixties.

Mr. Starr takes the time to indicate how Joey was unbearable to much of his staff, somewhat reminiscent of various accounts of how Eddie Cantor treated his radio staff. But Joey and Eddie do share one extremely admirable trait--a dedication to charitable causes (as set forth by Mr. Starr) and for that alone, Joey deserves our respect.

Incidentally, Mr. Starr's recounting of one Joey Bishop joke about the Texan who goes to Israel is one that I'll be telling people for a while.

Readable book about a marginal entertainer

Ask anyone under 45 about Joey Bishop, and the response you'll get will be "Who?" Michael Seth Starr aims to change that, although you'll be wondering by the end of the book why he bothers. Bishop was, at best, a marginal figure in the annals of American entertainment. During the 60's, he somehow managed to share the stage with superstars like Frank, Dean and Sammy despite having none of their charisma. And although Starr often describes him as the "top comedian of the 1960's," he also has to admit that Johnny Carson thrashed him in the late-night ratings, and Bishop's early 1960's sitcom was an utter flop.
Still, the book is readable. Bishop comes off as a hard-working, but demanding comic, with few friends. I hope he truly got good audience response in the 60's, because the lines quoted in this book fall flat on the printed page. I guess you had to be there. Starr is a good writer....perhaps he will choose a more intriguing subject for his next bio.

Denigrating and Skimpy Bio of Famed Comedian

Joey Bishop was the least-known of the Rat Pack and became the last of the group to have a biography written about him with this demeaning book. It is written tabloid-style by a writer who appears to go out of his way to denigrate his subject.

The book is way too short--less than 180 pages of material including photos (the last 50 pages list his TV episodes and movies)--and skips through Bishop's career with few details. This isn't a deep, insightful look at the man's personal life or his work. Instead it's rehashed clippings from magazines like TV Guide. So it's just a peripheral overview of the subject. Bishop deserves better.

In the final pages the writer reveals why the book is filled with so much negativity--Bishop wouldn't cooperate with him on it and in his one face-to-face meeting with the star, the author felt verbally attacked. Okay, so Joey was hot-headed with co-workers and as he aged got grouchy. There are dozens of similar stories of rich Hollywood celebrities that are the same. For some reason this book seems to only emphasize the negative aspects of Bishop's life (except for a couple token mentions of Joey's charity work, such as going deep into Vietnam to visit soldiers--and even that gets dissed!).

You certainly don't come away understanding the subject any better. There's only a passing mention of Bishop's wife and son. There are almost no first-person accounts by people involved with Joey. Instead it is quotes from magazines, lengthy quotes from Rat Pack routines and excerpts from Regis Philbin's book that mentions his time with Bishop. And there are numerous small factual errors and mixing up of dates.

Since the book is the only source on the subject, it's worth reading if you are extremely interested in Joey. But be prepared to be disappointed.
