The audience is surgeons and residents. The authors are some of the best in the field. The book is comprehensive with step-by-step instructions on how to complete a procedure. It is easily divided into subsections that reflect the subspecialization in the field. Reproductive endocrinology and infertility, oncology, and obstetrics all have ample discussions of problems and surgical techniques for treatment. The obstetrics section covers the physiological differences between the pregnant and nonpregnant state and appropriately identifies the surgical challenges. There is a nice inclusion of evidence-based medicine with frequent references to current literature. The authors use cartoon images instead of real-life pictures and the impact is striking. It allows for easier comprehension of the surgical procedure. This was a core textbook during my training, and this edition adds to its legacy. Comprehensive with excellent images, it is a must-have for any surgeon in gynecology.

I can't find the videos of this book

The book is very good BUT i can't find the videos while in the presentation of this book we find (Access high-quality video demonstrations online and see exactly how to perform selected vaginal surgeries)
I downloaded the inkling ebook and alwys i can't find these videos !!

You can see here the response of the tchnical support ( Wolters Kluwer):
I was told by the editors that the videos for that book were changed and are not coming out. There is another book that is similar to that one that has the videos. It's called: Te Linde's Atlas of Gynecologic Surgery
Is this legal?!!!!

Good guide

I have recently purchased the Amazon Echo Dot and after that purchased this guide to learn more about it. I liked that this book is very clearly written and I could very well understand how to set it up and use. While reading the guide I felt like the author was speaking directly to me and this guide answered all questions that I had. I can recommend it to everybody who owns Amazon Echo Dot or plans to buy one.

Simple and straight to the point.

The Amazon Echo Dot is a cut-down but still impressive version of the Echo. If you want Alexa but don't want to pay a premium price, this is a great option. The best thing about the Amazon Dot is that it gets smarter every time you use it. I was hesitant to purchase the item at first because I am not into technology but part of me want to buy it too for my class. With the help of this guide, there would be no hesitation anymore. It covers the basic information how to use the item and everything is already stated there. Easy to understand. Good details. Simple and straight to the point.

Great look at football when it was still very entwined with politics

Kuper definitely does his homework in writing this book, probably the first of its kind when written in the early 90's. I is hard to not appreciate all the traveling and risks he took in getting some of these interviews, but then again he is sometimes self serving about how hard the journey's were. Anyhow, he picks his topics well and focuses on one aspect of a particular area or rivalry that gives us a glimpse into the whole.

Some drawbacks were already apparent in the first chapter where you could clearly read into a bit of bias, but it only hurts it minimally. Overall, a great read into the world of 90's soccer with the history to back it up. Definitely reads differently than if it was written today as the politics of football have faded to make way for the business of football, but only 20 or so years ago it was quite different, great to appreciate the difference.

This is a really fine book, very difficult to put down. All of the chapters were interesting. As a Celtic fan, I enjoyed the chapter on the Old Firm and his non-involved, outsider's perspective was both amusing and illuminating (after all, for those of us who support one or the other, it's difficult to "step back" and examine things). Because the book is now quite a few years old, there are some political realities that have changed considerably, but it doesn't detract from how well Kuper captures the times and places he documents. I think even someone with only the faintest notion of the game itself would find this book enjoyable to read, as its focus is primarily cultural, social and political. A terrific read. Highly recommended.

In brisk prose and with the confidence of his vast knowledge of the era, Dallek interprets the life of the simple man who, having unexpectedly and with little experience assumed the presidency when FDR died, surprised everyone by so skillfully shouldering huge burdens. In his day, that meant ending the war with Japan (by authorizing the bombs that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki), ordering American troops to repel the invasion of Korea, firing Douglas MacArthur and facing down the Soviets. It also meant protecting the New Deal from erosion, dealing with striking labor and taking unprecedented steps to desegregate the government and armed forces. Just listing these achievements makes clear why Dallek, like other historians, places Truman high on the list of American presidents. Like so many other biographies in the splendid American Presidents series, Dallek's little book is now the best starting point for knowledge of Truman's life and for an astute assessment of his career. The first paragraph of Dallek’s yeomanly contribution to the American Presidents series pontificates that, with the Roosevelts and Wilson, Truman is one of the “great or near-great” twentieth-century presidents. What follows suggests that he was the best of those four, anyway. FDR had told him nothing, even of the atomic bomb that he would have to decide whether to use. He got no immediate credit for his administration’s real achievements, such as the Marshall Plan. His party fractured beneath him when he headed the ticket in 1948. He got blamed for FDR’s failings, such as employing the Communists Joe McCarthy demagogued about, and for an early career beholden to crooked Kansas City Democrat Tom Pendergast. That he very quickly adapted to wartime leadership, prevailed in 1948 by sheer energy and common-man appeal, seized initiative against security risks before Congress did, and was the clean cog in Pendergast’s machine went largely unappreciated almost until his death. Dallek leaves little doubt that you must disagree with Truman philosophically to consider him less than a damn good president. --Ray Olson

Robert Dallek is the author of several bestselling presidential histories, including Nixon and Kissinger: Partners in Power; An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy, 1917–1963; and the classic two-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson, Lone Star Rising and Flawed Giant. He has taught at Columbia, Oxford, UCLA, Boston University, and Dartmouth, and has won the Bancroft Prize, among numerous other awards for scholarship and teaching. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Nice brief bio of Harry Truman

Harry S. Truman's life story in a short, accessible biography. That's the premise of The American Presidents Series, and this is one of the most recent entrants in the stable. The late Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. was the series editor. In his introduction to each book in this series, he says (Page xvi): "The men in the White House express the ideals and values, the frailties and the flaws, of the voters who send them there. It is altogether natural that we should want to know more about the virtues and the vices of the fellows we have elected to govern us. As we know more about them, we will know more about themselves."

The book begins by noting that, traditionally, the 20th century presidents deemed to be great or near great include: Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry Truman. The "Preludes" section notes that (Page 1): "On the face of things, Truman's high standing is surprising. . . . Truman was notable for his ordinariness."

The book begins with his family background, his early years, his service in World War I, his early (failed) effort at a haberdashery business, and his decision to move into public life. The book well describes his moral dilemmas at one point: the corrupt Pendergast organization was willing to sponsor him for elective office. What would he do? Eschew the support of the machine? Or use its support and still try to stay clean? He did the latter and his political career began. By the way, to give a sense of The American Presidents' series, we come to see how and why FDR selected Truman as his Vice-Presidential partner by page 15!

Truman's time in the White House. . . . We see him reflecting on whether or not to use the atomic weaponry against Japan. We see him trying to adjust to the Post-World War II Cold War/Iron Curtain era. We see him trying to navigate between left and right in domestic politics, and sometimes seeming to drift. One intriguing line (Page 37): "And yet Truman was disinclined to confront the country with the emerging dangers he saw from Soviet aggression. . . ." This is a subtheme of the book, with the author, Robert Dallek, noting that on a number of occasions, Truman seemed to back off confronting difficult issues. It creates, in fact, a tension within this volume between the author commenting that Truman warranted his high rating by historians and then noting his occasional avoiding tough issues.

The story of his unexpected victory in 1948 over Thomas Dewey, the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, and his rapidly deteriorating public approval. . . . It's all here, including his active post-presidential career.

A very nice brief introduction to Henry Truman. This book has motivated me to consider buying one of the larger biographies of the subject and exploring his life more deeply. . . .

The Definitive Book on Sprinting

I purchased this book when it was first released in late 1990 and have read it cover to cover several dozen times over the years. Unfortunately, most of the attention and commentary regarding this book give a false impression of its content. Though the narrative does culminate in the drug scandal in Seoul, the topic of drug use by athletes (and by Charlie's sprinters in particular) is really of secondary importance and only constitutes a small portion of the book.

Speed Trap is primarily an autobiography of Charlie's career as an athlete and coach. In the course of reading about Charlie's training as an Olympic sprinter himself and the subsequent evolution of his coaching methods, the reader is treated to perhaps the best education on the technical aspects of sprinting ever put into print. From his early training with Percy Duncan and Harry Jerome to his subsequent tutelage under legendary sprint coach Gerard Mach, Charlie describes what he learned from these greats as well as how he synthesized and adapted their methods in developing his own training system. I know of no other book on sprinting that comes close to providing the quality of technical insight found in Speed Trap. To a certain extent, Speed Trap is a technical treatise on sprinting masquerading as an autobiography. While the description of the careers of athletes such as Ben Johnson, Angela Issajenko, Desai Williams, et al., is entertaining in its own right, it also serves to provide anecdotes that illustrate many of the technical concepts discussed throughout the book. Anyone who has met Charlie in person knows this is exactly how he teaches. In her own autobiography (Running Risks) Angela Issajenko describes how Charlie always seemed to have a story to explain any point he was trying to get across to his athletes.

Even on the topic of drugs, Speed Trap offers insights not found anywhere else. Most if not all of the literature related to anabolic steroids is dominated by the field of bodybuilding and to a lesser extent powerlifting. Charlie explains how steroid use by sprinters and similar athletes is a world apart from bodybuilding. As an example, in her first year of steroid use, Angela Issajenko's total dosage for the entire year was about 700mg, an amount many bodybuilders would use in a couple days. Much of the discussion of drug use by athletes is part of the larger topic of how sport is administered by the various governing bodies around the world. Charlie provides a very sobering insight into the bureaucratic and often corrupt nature of international sport.

Lastly, in addition to the quality of its content, Speed Trap is also remarkable for the quality of the writing. The narrative is written in a very conversational style that makes it very easy to read. Having met and trained with Charlie on a couple of occasions, I can attest to the fact that the book reads pretty much the way Charlie talks. I cannot recommend this book more highly for those interested specifically in sprinting or just training in general. If you can find a copy, it is well worth buying.

Charlie Francis, one in a billion

In an era where more is better, Charlie Francis gives a candid view on his methods of training some of the worlds best athletes. He was always looking for ways to improve his "system" with his athletes reaping the benefits. His unselfish approach and intellect were once in a lifetime. This book can be applied to any individual or team sport, not just track and field. A must for any current coach or aspiring coach.

Makes a good story, and some fine insight into better sprint training

Charlie Francis, like any elite coach taken out of the sport by drug controversy, lays out a good story about Ben & the Canadian sprint team's rise to international success. He brings up a lot of sound points from the world of sprint training that endure in the most successful camps and he makes what is probably a fair description of drug use at the elite level.

Sometimes it sounds like he paints everyone but his sprinters as the bad guys, and maybe that's true, but it is a fun read - especially if you honestly love international track & field. There are some interesting anecdotes slipped in throughout the book, including his experience at the Munich Olympics, the impact of Olympic boycotting on the athletes forced out of competition, and troubles bringing support to big meets.

Good story, fun to read, and there's some good stuff in there for any sprinter or coach to pick up on.

An intimate journey with a renowned artist

While reading this book I felt I was being led on an intimate journey to the heart of an artist. Mr. Rutenberg shares his life from when he was a very young child walking in the garden with his grandfather where he would put his face in the flowers and absorb the colors, to his current life in New York where he says his favorite walk is through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He says he never aspired to be an artist. He started drawing in first grade, painting in fourth, and declared himself an artist at ten. Along with telling his personal story Mr. Rutenberg talks about art and what it means to him to be an artist. He shares such insights as “the key to color is to try everything without scrutiny, just play. You can't think color; you have to see it.” and “Give your work time. It doesn't matter where you got it, only where you take it.”
There is a lot of good, thoughtful information about art within the pages of this book; written by an artist for artists. I recommend this book.

Brian's Story

"Clear Seeing Place: Studio Visits" by Brian Rutenberg is one of the most introspective books I have ever read. Born and raised in the Low Country of coastal South Carolina, he takes us through very specific moments that unveiled the artist within him. Making his way to NYC when he was a bit older, he shares the various trials he faced but from a very down-to-earth, raw perspective. Brian discusses exactly what a painter should and should not think about when it comes to painting. He elaborates about what painting is and is not and compares it to other pieces of art like photography. As someone who hasn't painted beyond an art class assignment, I feel as though his perspective will allow me to look at an art gallery with newfound perspective. I believe that any artist stands a lot to gain from this book; I appreciate the genuine story of his life. I am sure his children will love reading it when they are older too!

it's like sitting down with a friend for a talk about art...

Brian Rutenberg is a contemporary artist that hosts a series on YouTube called "Studio Visits." Part autobiographical musings, part art theory, part talking about process, it's like sitting down with a friend for a talk about what it means to make art -- more the stuff of the late night coffeehouse than of the lecture hall. I've been painting for a couple of years and find these talks very motivational. There's a lot out there about how to paint or on art history but insights into a painter's mind are few and far between.

Clear Seeing Place is an extension of the video series. Brian's writing flows and his enthusiasm for art is infectious. I see this book having a permanent place on my painting table for whenever I need inspiration or a kick in the pants. It occupies the same place for me as books like Bayles and Orland's Art and Fear or Joe Fig's Inside the Painter's Studio
