Why Mara is Elisa's Perfect Companion

I have to give Carson credit--these prequels definitely serve to help round out the world and give us a different look at Elisa (or the role she fills). In "Shadow Cats", told from Alodia's POV, we saw Elisa as a younger girl, frightened, but understanding so much more than Alodia gave her credit for. Now in "The Shattered Mountain", though Elisa has a very small role near the end, Carson shows us how from the very first moment Mara saw that Elisa was special and would understand her.

This also serves as a way to establish the reason for a lot of Mara's early antagonism as well as the bond she shared with many of the children shown throughout the first two books. In a matter of less than a hundred pages we see Mara go from a dreamer who saw freedom only in how far she could run to a leader, keeping a dozen or so children grounded and brave against impossible odds.

I wouldn't say that Mara is hard or grim; she has moments of such, but who wouldn't under such odds? She is trying to keep frightened, starving, injured and grieving children alive while avoiding the Invierno who are everywhere. She makes a lot of decisions that are hard and doesn't have a lot of time for coddling. Survival is on the line and discomfort now could save their lives.

I already liked Mara from the books, so this was just icing. This served to illustrate why she is such a good fit with Elisa. I do think this was a story you could only fully appreciate if you had read the books first. The details we learned throughout those books are fully explored here and thus all the more appreciated.

Excellent Novella!

This world, these characters, this story is just amazing. She could put out a novella about these characters eating a meal and I would definitely read it just because I can't get enough of everything that Rae Carson has created. Not to mention all of these covers are so brilliant, beautiful and attention grabbing. If you don't know what series I'm talking about then I suggest you go out and buy the first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns; you can thank me later.

Mara fell in love with a boy. It all starts with that, doesn't it? Not only did she fall in love with a boy but she was planning on running away with said boy. Her father would never approve their marriage and she was safer farther away from him. Problem is, she never gets the chance to live out her happily every after. Her village is viciously attacked and many are dead or left for dying. It's up to her, the man she loves' younger brother and a few other children varying in ages from four to fourteen. Julio, the man she was to run away with, used himself as a distraction so she could save herself and the few children left standing. It was a brave, selfless thing to do and who knows if he's survived or was caught during his distraction.

This novella is the story of how Mara went from being a girl in love to being a girl who care and look out for those who needed it. She went from being a girl abused by her father to a girl who would lead others to safety. Just like how Elisa grew so much in her first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, we can see how much Mara grew in this novella. Mara is a character I really like in this series and now, she is one I truly admire.

If you love this series, like I said, there's no reason for you not to check out this novella. If you're like me, you can't get enough of this world, these characters and this story so don't deny yourself a chance for more now.

Heartbreaking and amazing short story from this epic trilogy.

After having read and loved The Bitter Kingdom yesterday I knew I had to read this novella right away. And I'm so glad I did. The Shattered Mountain is an amazing short story. Although it isn't that short, it is one hundred pages. Yet I wished it was longer. Because I loved reading about Mara, and her story. The writing is as beautiful as ever. And the world just as deadly.

My review won't be all that long, since the novella is short and I don't won't to spoil everything that happens :) The Shattered Mountain is told from the point of view of Mara, who we get to know in the Girl of Fire and Thorns books. This is the story about her life before she is the maid of Elisa. How she got there. And oh. It is amazing and heartbreaking and just perfect.

If you read the summary, you know what this novella is about. Mara is seventeen years old, and she's living with her Pa in a small village. I hated her father. He abuses her, and he didn't seem nice at all. Happy we didn't see too much about him. But she's also happy. Because she has a boyfriend; Julio. And oh. Julio just seemed so amazing, and I loved him, and it breaks my heart, because having read the other books I knew what would happen. Sobs. But so amazing. It is really heartbreaking. And I loved it all.

The same day that Mara and Julio is planning on running away their village gets attacked by the Inviernos. And oh. It is so heartbreaking. Because they are killing everyone with their fire and arrows. Yet I loved reading about it. So many things happen after that. Mara gets away with a bunch of children, where she is the oldest one and have to take care of them all. But it's hard. Because they don't have enough food, and they have to travel in the mountain for at least a week. I loved every second of it.

We get to meet many characters as well. Loved Julio. And I loved his brother, Adán. He was just so strong. And I loved reading about Raynaldo as well. Kind and strong, yet they are both young. But tiny Teena broke my heart. She was just so little and so strong yet broken as well. I just loved reading about them all. The plot in this book is also really, really good, and I could not stop reading. There is action, heartbreak, romance and just everything. It is a very exciting read, and I'm so thrilled that I read it.

I loved reading from Mara's point of view, and I just wish it had been ever longer. I also love these novella's that Rae writes. I hope she will write many more from this amazing series :) I think you all would love this short story. Especially if you have read The Girl of Fire and Thorns. But even if you haven't read those books I think you would love this one. Because it's amazing. And heartbreaking. But it have some hope. It is a truly amazing novella, and I simply cannot wait to read more from Rae Carson.

Very useful, great read

Just okay but it's by JM Madden so it's worth a try

I was so excited when I saw that JM Madden had a new release but I’ll confess that this one was just okay for me. The level of heat and sensuality is quite high and it seems like there’s more sex in this novella than there is in the full-length Embattled novels that I love. For the record, the heat level is nothing that I'm complaining about! This is Rachel’s story and props go to Ms. Madden for writing a book focused on a female military warrior. Rachel is a former Marine helicopter pilot and she has had her share of injuries. Because she’s a Marine and because her new job at LNF sees her surrounded my men, she tends to be “one of the guys”. Personally, I think she could have been as engaging of a character even if she was just a tiny bit more in touch with her feminine side. Calm down…I do mean just a tiny bit because she’s fine the way she is. Rachel is a motorcycle riding woman whose dinner repertoire centers on tv dinners (a somewhat dated term used in the book) and she has apparently not gone lingerie shopping before. While those are all good for Rachel, they made her seem a bit extreme. Again, she could have been a strong woman and still had a clue how to cook (for herself) or how to wear makeup (for herself) even if she chose not to do the latter. Over the course of the book, though, she bonds with a female colleague and is open to exploring things that she has ignored due to her existence in such a masculine world. Good for her! That said, she’s attractive, smart and quite skilled. Dean West is a Denver police officer who witnesses Rachel’s car being totaled when a hit and run driver nails her lovely BMW. Dean rescues her and they start a relationship from there. Dean is a bit younger than Rachel but that only gives her a second’s pause, and it gives Dean none. He treats her better than she has ever been treated in a relationship and makes her feel valued. They fall into bed very quickly, but not unrealistically so. Anyway, this is really a story of Rachel finding herself at the same time that she finds true love. There’s no drama, no angst…just a quickly told relationship that starts with what should be called a happy accident. The hea happens just as you expect it to. There are a couple of editing nits but no biggies. The secondary characters including Rachel's neighbor and Dean's partner don't really play a role in the plot.

Here’s why this novella rates 3.5-stars from me: 5-stars for its heat, 2-stars for the storyline, and 4-stars because I got to catch up with Shannon (book 1) and Chad (book 3) and because Ms Madden deserves it for the stories she tells. Full disclosure, though, if you (like me) loved the Embattled books, you won’t get your next fix from Her Secret Wish.

Wishes Do Come True.

I'm sure we've all heard that cliche "everything happens for a reason," right? In this case, everything in the past has led two people to exactly where they're supposed to be...the moment they meet and their lives change forever.

Dean, a cop, and Rachel, an investigator for Lost and Found, are living their lives, not realizing they aren't complete, until the day their paths cross. Rachel is the victim of a hit and run and is injured, yet thankfully they're fairly minor, and her previous injury, from her Marine days, wasn't exacerbated too much. Dean, while not on patrol at the time, sees the accident and stops to help.

Their connection is instantaneous and Dean is determined to help keep her calm until the ambulance arrives. He knows his reaction to her isn't his normal "cop mode," this is personal.

After Rachel is released the next day, trying to figure out how to get home, Dean shows up. They chitchat and the connection deepens a little more. When Dean asks her out, unable to wait until she's feeling more like herself, Rachel is surprised, yet accepts.

The more time they spend together and the more they learn about each other, they both know they're on the cusp of something special. Unfortunately, between their jobs, being able to spend time together is a rarity, but they make the most of what they get...quantity over quality. But they do need to work through some issues...the short amount of time they've known each other vs. the intensity of their feelings, the small age difference between them (he's a few years younger), their respective jobs, etc.

Will Dean and Rachel take the risk and reach for their HEA? Will Rachel be able to overcome her hesitation in returning, in a civilian sense, to one of her dreams? Will they be able to handle the danger each other could be in on a daily basis?

I highly recommend you one-click this book now and find out. While it's not necessarily a requirement, I do suggest you read this series in order for the sake of continuity and full enjoyment of this series and the wonderful characters. I would like to state, while this book was previously released in a box set, this story has been expanded upon so while the beginning will be the same, the rest is brand new.

Psst...I also admit, I can't help but think of the song Private Eyes by Hall & Oates when it comes to the investigators of LNF. Think about it..."Private eyes. They're watching you. They see your every move." *don't judge me* LOL)

All the books in this series have great characters with real issues and impactful stories

Originally part of the Protect and Serve anthology this novella is twice the size. The ongoing standalone series, Lost and Found, is a powerful and exciting series of combat modified vets working as detectives and security in the private sector. This is Rachel's story, a Marine helicopter pilot injured enough to be medically discharged. She's a tough cookie and draws the attention of Officer Dean West. He comes to her aide during an accident and is immediately drawn to Rachel. In the short novella the action stops after their first intimate evening. This expanded version goes deeper into their relationship and Rachel gets called out on a job. Dean is her equal in strength, passion and integrity. They are a true fit and a pleasure to read. All the books in this series have great characters with real issues and impactful stories. This is the only one about a female member of the LNF Agency, the others are for her male peers. In exchange for my honest review I was given an early copy.

Lee is a sociologist, and his approach to the sociology—or is it economics?—in Tyler Perry's films is 100 percent admirable: he writes that he 'watched each movie no less than ten times, carefully coding and cataloguing themes, plots, and character development regarding their relation to pertinent socio-cultural themes.' This is the first book-length study of Perry, and Lee is brilliant at perceiving clearly, not sentimentally, the role of religion. . . .The author never perceives movies as movies; he could be talking about novels. He deals with the meaning of ten films, looking at 'the dream and the nightmare' of blacks. Dreams are strength, education, devotion, love, freedom, blessings. Nightmares are poverty, hunger, drugs, white domination, suffering, inequality, prison, hatred, injustice, rape, and best of all, madness (especially in the Madea films). The book is lovingly informative, and Lee knows the context of the films (be it reality, novels, or other films). A very good and thorough textbook.

This textbook gives deep coverage to the areas of short fiction, drama, and poetry. It contains an astounding amount of information. There are quite a number of full stories, poems, and plays--although I have not counted, I would say that the number could be approaching 1000.

The authors have done a great job in selecting writings to illustrate concepts. All of the selected writings are good, in the objective sense--they contain deep meaning. Of course, personal taste is subjective, and my experience was that some of the writings were thoroughly enjoyable, and none were quite intolerable.

There are also questions after pieces of literature to help the reader achieve more insight than they might of their own devices, small sections that offer tips on writing, light biographies and case studies of various authors. Throughout the course I have made lists of various authors I found to be particularly interesting, for further reading on my own time.

This singular textbook was, for the purpose of my class, equivalent to a boxed set which contains each of the treated topics in a separate book. The page numbers corresponded exactly to those of the books in the boxed set. I saved a good bit of money in purchasing this, and I much prefer a single textbook to a clumsy boxed set.

I like this textbook enough that now that my class is done, I am still considering whether to keep it for independent learning or sell it to recoup some of the cost.

The best English anthology yet, in a form easy to carry

It's the best anthology I've seen in 50 years. It has detailed explanations of all the literary areas it covers, and sample student essays which greatly help freshmen transitioning from high school to college. The 13th edition is a slight but not a significant improvement. I have bought several copies to lend to students still waiting for theirs to arrive. Be sure to get the portable edition, which divides the heavy hard cover book into four paperback books which will save your arm by carrying far less weight to the classroom. These editors make it easy to learn and easy to teach Freshman English, which I have done for ten years. Rental is cheaper, but this is a book you will want to keep.

A lot of content

This book contains a lot of content related to short stories, poetry and drama. Due to the size, the pages are very thin and sometimes it is hard to find things quickly when the pages are so thin. (No fault of Amazon's). I recieved the book when expected, however, the front cover had a tear in the right upper corner. The first few pages are kind of crumpled down due to the front cover tear. There were no markings or highlighting in the book that I have come across. I have always been impressed with the Amazon service and that is why I am a repeat customer.
