Great book! More geared to P-Chem students and students in Physics.

I'm a graduate student in Physical Chemistry, and from my point of view Principles of Physical Biochemistry is a great book and a welcomed addition to my library! I can see how many students and reviewers can rate this book as negative without the proper preparation. As a matter of fact, most graduate students in Chemistry (organic, inorganic, analytical, materials,....) majors found this book and course to be very difficult and challenging. Let's face it, physical chemistry and all of its sub-disciplines ARE mathematical, and require extensive knowledge of physics. To comprehend and appreciate the material and scope of this book you need to be comfortable with single & multivariable calculus, differential equations (basic understanding of separation of variables; understanding how solutions to D.E.'s are applicable to the equation itself), basic linear algebra (matrix operation, inverse matrix, determinants, etc..), and vector analysis (vector integration, multiplication, etc..). It's not that the math is overwhelming or difficult, but you have to be comfortable with it in the sense that you can understand the basic structure of the equations presented. In addition, you need two semesters of undergraduate physical chemistry or physics courses that have taught statistical mechanics, classical thermodynamics, non-relativistic quantum mechanics (the Schrödinger equation, Dirac's bra and ket formalism, perturbation theory, eigenvalue problems, and so forth), physical kinetics, and some exposure to x-ray structure analysis (Bragg equation, reciprocal space, vector analysis, Fourier analysis). To those students taking a course of this nature not familiar with the physics or mathematics-this isn't the place to be learning prerequisites for the material presented. With the mentioned preparation this book becomes very accessible! It's geared more for graduate students or advanced undergraduates that are specializing in physical chemistry, chemical physics, and so forth. This is the audience that this book is geared for and I'm sure it's the audience that find this book very straight forward (well, at least I did). So, if you're in theoretical or physical chemistry, or any other of the physical sciences, this is your book. If you don't enjoy physics and its application to chemical systems stay away.

Rigorous and authoritative, but unfortunately too terse

This book appears eighteen years after the famous Cantor and Schimmel three-volume "Biophysical Chemistry", and it is the first one to cover most of the topics treated there. That is why it was welcomed by biophysical chemistry teachers, although it is less then half the size of the aforementioned text.
This is not a book for the unprepared mind. To be able to follow it satisfactorily, the reader must have a firm grasp of physical chemistry together with all of the advanced math it requires. Most of today's biochemistry students do not meet these requirements (partly because the most popular introductory biochemistry texts have turned into non-quantitative - or, better, anti-quantitative - picture books), so I would expect them to have trouble with the material presented in the book, and indeed, some students have already had. In the Preface, the authors brag that they "offer one of the best treatments of NMR and X-ray diffraction available". Not so. Maybe it is most up-to date, bu students (biochemistry majors) reported having a hard time with both of the chapters, simply because they did not understand the liberally used mathematical apparatus.
Still, I am aware that many of the topics covered in the book are inherently difficult, and that the book serves well to the minority that meets all the prerequisites. As I am lucky enough to fit into this category, I found the treatment of biochemical thermodynamics and receptor-ligand interactions very good and very up to date. But, since much of the material covered here is essential to understanding biochemistry, I think that future editions of the text should be expanded in a direction that would serve those students with insufficient background. One way to do this would be to break up the most difficult chapters into two - e.g.a "concepts" and a "machinery" chapter, like in P.W.Atkins' "Physical Chemistry".

This Is Just As Rigorous Mathematically

This physical biochemistry text breaks down into three major sections: Macromolecular structure and dynamics. spectroscopy, and solution behavior of macromolecules. In very simple words, this treatise is not easy to read. It is definitely NOT for beginners in the field. In fact, the materials covered in this book require knowledge of chemistry major to comprehend.
Treatment n quantum mechanics and spectroscopy in this text go as deep as perturbation theory with all the rigorus mathematics. Readers might want to study ut Atkins' Physical Chemistry before flipping to sectins on statistical thermodynamics. Sections on X-ray, NMR, and absorption spectroscopy are written very clearly but smewhat too terse. Yet the terse treatment of these topics does nt necessarily make the concepts easier to understand.
Overall this text is worth all the information. Yet readers should be cautious abut whether ther are prepared for the level of mathematics and chemistry.

About the Author
As young adult, Trollope endured seven years of poverty in the General Post Office in London before accepting a better-paying position as postal surveyor in Banagher, Ireland in 1841. The years in Ireland formed the basis of his second career delineating clerical life in small cathedral towns.

One of Trollope's best

Browsing in a bookstore, I read a blurb of this book that told every secret twist of its plot. I was enraged, but read 'Cousin Henry' anyway. It was superb, and illustrates perfectly Trollope's own philosophy, given in 'Barchester Towers,' that a good book will not suffer even from the reader knowing what happens. 'Cousin Henry' has other, and considerable, merits, than suspensefulness--although it is suspenseful. It has been called the most psychologically probing of Trollope's works; indeed, Trollope himself thought it to be so, and was very proud of it. The plot, in brief, and without giving anything away, is this: Cousin Henry is the heir of the Squire of Llanfeare--according to the will everyone knows about. But Henry knows of another, later, will, that disinherits him. Most of the book concerns Henry's agonizing over whether or not to make this will public. There is also another plot thread, concerning the Squire's daughter, Isabel, who can only marry if her husband is willing to take her last name (shades of 'Cecilia'). I'll say it again: one of Trollope's best.

Good, but hardly his best

I love Trollope. He is my favorite nineteenth-century British writer. His style suits me down to the ground. I'd like anything he's written. I have twenty of his books lined up on a shelf. When I want a great treat, I pull one down and read it.

I got several chuckles out of poor Cousin Henry vacillating between his desire to do right and his desire to do wrong. Still, I don't think anyone besides the other reviewer here would call COUSIN HENRY Trollope's best book.

Hopefully not his best

I decided to read Anthony Trollop's "Cousin Henry" after reading the two available reviews. Although I enjoy nineteenth century British fiction, I have to confess I've never read anything by Trollop. The situation is a common one in this genre: Henry is supposed to inherit his uncle's property through entitlement, not because he is loved, admired or respected. Quite the contrary - he is none of those things and this makes up the bulk of the novel. Will Henry live up to, or overcome, his despicable character? While it is well-written, the author does tend to go over Henry's internal conflict again and again and again. Hopefully it's not his best; I look forward to trying something else by him.

Incredible resource to understand and combat evil!

Bob Larson has consistantly stood out as a warrior in fighting the evil in our world that many would like to ignore. Of particular substance in this book, is the ability for parents today to educate and make themselves aware of the devices of the enemy and especially things aimed at young people today. There is plenty of evidence that bizarre multiple killings by our young and uncontrolled rage by "normal" kids is most unsettling, but to not know "why" and "how" to combat this type of terror would make things unbearable! Thanks to Bob Larson and many of his books and videos we have hope and are truly assured that God is in control and has ultimate power to conquer as demonstrated through Bob's own Christain testimony and ministry.

Hard hitting and well-informed

This book covers all bases and is informative and makes for a fascinating read. I only deducted a star because I would have liked more information on how to do spiritual warfare - although what is there has been well-investigated, and Mr Larson has had great success with his methodology. His spiritual warfare approach leans towards the Pentecostal system which is more effective than Catholic exorcisms which seem to rely on prayer - and a hit and miss approach - rather than taking command of the situation with what Jesus has won for us already, and through the power of His blood, and also an intelligent understanding of how the demonic works. homeopathy is NOT an occult practice

I do respect Bob Larson and the work that he does, and he had me until he started in on Alternative Health care.

Homeopathy is NOT satanic or occult and since when is treating your illness with natural herbs making one open to demonic posession?

(Personally I'm one of those who believe that the pharmacuetical companies and the drugging of our children with meds and all the adults on psychotropic meds are far more evil.)

I am a bodyworker and I start each session with a prayer, to God, for that person's healing....don't tell me that by assisting someone to heal and feel better I am perpetrating evil.

God didn't give the gift of healing so people could sit and suffer, he gave it to be used to help others. God put us here with the herbs to heal our ills, homeopathy and herbal medicine is far more Biblical than pharmacueticals and surgeries.

I do believe people can become possessed, I do believe Satanism is alive and well, but not everything is evil.....and there is a big difference between welcoming Satan and practicing occult rituals and alternative health care. It's like comparing knives and teddy bears.....

Also all "science of the mind" schools of thought are not evil either....yes there are some bad people out there, but there are also some Evangelical Christian Churchs who are just as warped and disturbing. I was disappointed at the comments on Esalen, which is and organization for human growth and healing, not harm, hurt and darkness.

Reasons to buy this book

If you kid love rescue bots then they are going to love this book. It has 5 stories in 1 book, which makes it convenient for my son to bring it with him when we go out, instead of lugging a few separate books to keep him entertained. The stories are easy for him to follow and at the beginning of each story there are lesson words to look out for to develop his reading skills. A great buy!

Good Value; Good Book to Try

The Rescue Bots are four Transformers, (Chase, Heatwave, Boulder and Blades), who have been tasked by Optimus Prime to serve and protect humans. They are, respectively, a police bot, a fire bot, a construction bot, and a copter bot. This book is a collection of six stand alone books - one for each Transformer, one for Optimus Prime, (who is Optimus Primal when in T. Rex dinosaur mode), and a sixth book that lines all of the characters up in a Rescue Bots origin story.

All I remembered about this whole world was that Transformers transformed from one thing into another, that some became dinosaurs, and that Optimus Prime was a good guy. Oh, and I knew that every kid in my family wanted Transformer toys for birthdays and holidays. (And I go all of the way back to when this first started in 1984. Fun fact, back then a couple of the bad guys transformed into micro-cassettes and one transformed into a cassette recorder. Ahh, memories.) Anyway, this book will help get you oriented if you're new to Transformers and will serve as a fine readable introduction to Transformers for young kids. (It really is six books bound together into one book. Paper is heavy, color is excellent, and the price is a fraction of what the six stand alones would cost.)

That said, is it worth reading? Well, this is very basic stuff. It seemed pre-chapter book to me, with only two to three very brief sentences per page. It's Level One in the Little, Brown and Company "Passport to Reading" system, which means short words in simple sentence structures. And that's what you get.

The interest level is high; the drawings are cartoonish, but colorful and clear. The action is on a put-out-the-fire-and-catch-a-dino level. Heroes are heroes, and there isn't any ironic detachment or sub-text. This is straight up action-packed hero stuff.

The book struck me as a great way to test the waters with regard to a youngster's inclination to start reading, his interest in hero/adventure fiction, and her interest in the whole Transformers phenomenon. Even if Transformers don't end up being your reader's favorite, the book is fine as a more general trial balloon and it certainly aims to grab young readers.

I was generally satisfied with the book and so would suggest it as a legit candidate for a first reader.

My kids love this book

My kids love this book. It is basically a re-write of some of the episodes from TV. It includes all their favorite characters. It is simple enough for early readers. If your kids aren't already familiar with the Rescuebot world this might not be as interesting. I withheld a star because there isn't any new original content. Daddy get's tired of reading the same old stories over and over.

Powerful and deeply moving.

Vance Packard, in researching his book "The Status Seekers," found that upward mobility in the United States was much more difficult than Americans would like to believe, and that those who were successful made it largely by cutting ties to their roots. Although framed in the context of ethnicity--Richard Rodriguez' book makes that same point. Moving up from working class to upper middle class promised success and acceptance and self-respect, but getting there was a little like edging out onto the ice, feeling inadequate and fearful that at any moment he might fall through. This book will resonate with anyone--immigrant or not, minority or not--who has made such a journey. Rodriguez scathingly criticizes affirmative action and bi-lingual education programs, correctly identifying the first as promoting socially crippling labels--"disadvantaged minority"--and the second as an obstacle to what he sees as the keys to success in America--a solid education and learning to speak and write English well. Rodriguez discovers early on what many of those with romantic notions about their ethnic or racial heritage eventually come to realize--that he is an American. But in the sadness he feels at the growing distance between himself and his parents, he fails--and several previous reviewers of this book fail--to note one very important thing. Upward mobility occurs incrementally, not in one leap. Rodriguez was put in a position to get that excellent education, to learn to speak unaccented English, and to become a respected author and scholar by parents who left Mexico and the little homogeneous Catholic towns and moved to the United States. In short, by parents who had cut the ties to their own roots.

It still works!

As an experiment, I decided to use this book for two weeks with the suggested music. To my amazement, it really works! I'm just 20 and so it is a huge novelty not to follow a tv screen.
In the book, Jane doesn't just address aerobics, but where society places people in life, the enviroment and healthy eating.
I now have this workout on DVD so really use the book as reference to healthy living.
You would have thought that it would be hard to follow a book to workout with. But it isn't. For every move there are professionally taken indepth photographs with descriptions.
You really use this book until you remember the moves off by heart. But it's use doesn't stop there as it is jam packed with so much information.
And the funny thing is it feels better working out in the absense of a television screen.

GREAT FITNESS BOOK FOR BODY AND LIFE

I purchased this book based on three things. One I wanted to see an example of Jane Fonda's original 1982 workout(hard to find/expensive). Two I love almost all of JF workouts. Three the one review I read confirmed I needed this for my collection. This is truly a wonderful book I can see why it was a best seller. This book offers information on a wide range of subjects from self-esteem, diet, social and enviromental issues, not to mention the two workouts. This was a great buy.

This book offers a begginer and advanced workout. Each workout begins with warm-up and ends with a cool down. At the begging of each exercise routine there is a list of music that could accompany the exercise. This can be used as a guide to choosing your own music. Both routines have an aerobics, arms, waist, abs, hips and thighs, bottocks. The workouts last about 30-45 for beginner and 40-60 mins for advanced. The cardio portion of both workouts are simple but short, however you can easily extend it.

This workout is great for the flexibility it offers. This is a workout that you can truly make your own. You could even do it while you are watching television. One of the things I really liked was making my own music to this workout. Being abel to chose your own music that you enjoy, really keeps you going. This is great if you like to make compilation tapes or cds.

Now I know what your thinking I don't go for exercise books. And for the most part I would agree, with all the page turning reading descriptions and the pictures that make no sense. But this is written and shown in a very clear manner. Over time this should just be a guide. Because you should start to memorize the workout.

This is a great workout if your short on time or you don't feel like going to the gym of even putting a exercise tape in the vcr. This workout out is total body toning. You could even use light hand weights during some of the arm movements for extra work. However some of the movements can be jarring and hard on the joints. Just modify it to fit your own personal needs. If it feels wrong don't do it. If you like this workout I would recommend Jane Fonda's New Workout Book or VHS and Jane Fonda's Women Coming of Age and Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout.

Still a great book

I bought this book in the 80's after the birth of my son. Within 4 months, I had lost 20 lbs & was toned & trim. A few years ago, I made the stupid error of getting rid of it. I repurchased it again because the excercises remain effective and it is a killer workout. Old school for me is the way to go!

I knew that Flint’s story wouldn’t be easy to read

Fighting Shadows is a book I’ve been dying for. I read Fighting Silence this past February. I’ve read about 150 books so far this year and Fighting Silence is still my top read of 2015. So getting a second book in this series about the Page’s middle brother Flint is something I’ve been looking forward to. After finishing Silence, I knew that Flint’s story wouldn’t be easy to read. The Page brother’s never seem to have it easy.

Flint isn’t in a good place. He’s pushing away the people who love him. He’s hurt, and more than just physically hurt. He loves his brothers more than anything, but he’s in love with someone he can’t have and it’s devastating. Not being able to deal with the hurt and the guilt, he gets away for a while. When he meets Ash Mabie, he’s not in a good place, but he still is a good man. He tries to help her and it means everything.

Ash is a great person who hasn’t lived the best life. She’s got a crappy family and hasn’t really had anyone in her life who cared or stuck up for her. When she meets Flint, she knows he's special. She is able to see the real Flint who has been hiding away. She is able to get through to him when no one else can.

I loved the dynamic of Ash and Flint’s relationship. Flint could be so grouchy and Ash was the perfect balance of smiles and sunshine. She was really able to open Flint up, see the real him and she loved him for it. She could care less that he was in that chair. She saw Flint. She wanted him. The man he is now. No matter what was happening in his life or how he was feeling, a smile from Ash could make everything better. She gave him a feeling of worth again. Just by smiling at him and accepting him.

I wish I could say this couple had an easy path and glided right into their happy ever after. They both deserve that. Easy love. But love isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s rough, messy and sometimes people (*cough*FLINT*cough*) are just jerks. I thought the turn their story took was interesting. I liked how it played out.

Flint was never my favorite Page brother. And after reading part of this book, I thought… yeah. Definitely not my favorite. But he really grew on me. I loved how he changed and proved himself to Ash. No one is perfect. He was going through so much physically and emotionally it’s easy to understand why he acted the way he did. I was so happy that by the end of the story he won me over.

Ash on the other hand I loved from the start! She is one of the best heroines I’ve read about in a while. I loved her positive attitude. How even though her life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows she always looked on the bright side of things. I love how she was with Flint- and with Quarry. I just loved her in general! Ash wasn’t perfect. She had some insecurities, but her reasons were real. She was real. She pretty much stole the show and made this book for me.

This series is epic. These books are absolutely perfect for a reader like me. I can’t put my finger on what I love so much or what makes them so amazing, they just are. I highly recommend this series. I can’t wait to read more books by Aly because I think she is an amazing story teller and I love her writing. And after that ending… I am dying for Quarry’s book. I know it will shatter my heart, but I also know it will be nothing short of spectacular!

I am in FLOVE with the Page brothers! Another fanfreakintastic read from Aly Martinez!!!

To say I’ve been chomping my nails waiting for Flint’s story is a serious understatement. The wait was so worth it!! OMG! I loved Till Page in Fighting Silence. I FLOVE Flint’s story. I don’t even know how I could love Flint’s story more, but I do. Or maybe my heart is just torn in two for these boys. Whatever it is, they are stories I will never forget.

At the end of Till’s story, you just knew that Flint’s story was going to be an emotional rollercoaster. I knew my heart would break. I knew my heart would soar and I knew that I would fall in love with Flint. Fighting Shadows takes off right where Fighting Silence ends. They can be read as standalones, but please pick up Fighting Shadows I guarantee you will love Till Page’s story which will introduce you to Flint also.

I was seriously blown away with the first. Now, I do believe I just got knocked flat on my @$$! Even if you didn’t read the first book (which again I am telling you that you MUST or you are missing out) you will fall right into this book with no problems (except me being mad you didn’t read the first book, lol)

This is all about Flint Page ( Till’s younger brother) and Ash Mabie. You will live Flint’s journey of trying to overcome what happened in Fighting Silence and acceptance of what is now his life. He has always felt more love for Eliza (Till’s wife) than he should. I understand why he feels what he does; it’s easily confused when you have a mother figure/ friend/ beautiful woman around you for the first time in your life. It’s not until he meets Ash that finally begins to live and recognizes his true feelings. I love Ash’s character; despite how she lived she was the complete opposite of what you would expect her to be.

And folks, that’s all you’re going to get from me, because I feel like I will start spewing spoilers and no one likes that!

I really am a new Aly Martinez super fan. Sure, I’ve read some of her other books and I’ve enjoyed each that I’ve read but this Page boys, I just can’t even put into words how much I love them. I love each character in these books, they all blend so well together creating the perfect cocktail! Her stories flow and will leave you reading straight into the night because you can’t put them down. Quarry’s book is next and I just know without a doubt his story will be equally heartbreaking. The Page brothers haven’t had an easy life and your heart surely won’t have an easy ride when reading these books!

Kudos Aly! Another 5…errr 6? Can I give a 6 star read? SURE I CAN! This is a must read series everyone. Pick them BOTH up now.

Fighting Shadows is the story of Flint and Ash; it is book number 2 in Aly Martinez’s On The Ropes Series. Each book in this series can be read as a standalone, however, I would definitely recommend reading Fighting Silence first as the characters do cross over.
Nothing in Flint’s life has ever come easy – to call him a fighter, would be an understatement. He has fought in the gym, he showed as much promise as his brother Till, but his career was cut short due to a tragic occurrence. He struggles with his feelings for Eliza and what that means for his relationship with his brother. He also becomes quite withdrawn and sullen, and begins alienating those that love him the most.
Until he meets Ash Mabie – the beacon in an other wise dark world. Ash is the light to his darkness, and although the two may seem an unlikely duo they do bring out the best in each other. However, as circumstances would have it, nothing is at it seems with Ash and when the truth comes out, Flint does what he does best, he ices her out.
Once he realizes his mistake, he does his utmost to find her – but will it be too late to fight the shadows of the past? Will Ash be able to look past his feelings for Eliza? Will Flint finally be given his happy ending.?
Overall, this is a wonderful story and I would recommend to anyone. The point of view althernates throughout between Flint and Ash, which is really interesting – from a brooding alpha male to a damaged pick pocket with a heart of gold.
I loved that we got to see this dark side of Flint, in the first book, although life wasn’t easy, he did seem quite upbeat and the optimist of the family. I enjoyed that Aly wrote this dark and twisty soul and I loved watching his character develop. I have to say Aly outdid herself with this novel.
The character of Ash is a breath of fresh air – initially we meet her as this pick pocket helping her thieving father and we are not sure how to feel about her, but as the story develops we begin to understand her reasons for doing things, and we also see the softer side of her. I fell in love with the character of Ash Mabie – a gentle soul with so much love to give, but one who has also endured so much pain.
This is another magnificent 5 star read for me, Aly Martinez you are a literary goddess and I cannot wait to read all about Quarry’s story, I know that one is going to leave me absolutely devastated.

Everything You Need To Know To Live Victoriously

The author of this book was not only saved in Dr. Lake's church in Portland,Ore.,he also traveled with Dr. Lake and stayed in his home, where he was healed of deadly food poisoning while reading these very sermons. Gordon Lindsay also pastored Dr. Lake's church in Texas for a while. The beauty of this book is in the fact that Lindsay did not add to or take away, he just published. These sermons by Dr. Lake are probably some of the best I have ever read. One sermon (p.75) tells you exactly how to know AND do God's Will, and how to be led by the Holy Spirit. As The General Overseer of Dr. Lake's organization, I have made this book mandatory reading for all our Bible College students, Ministerial Candidates, and Healing Room Personnel and patients. This one is a MUST READ.

The real thing

The first time I heard about this book was through a friend who told me that for a certain amount of time after reading it-something like 3 years-he did not even catch a cold. I thought to myself, "If only I could find that book, what good could it do me too!" Thank God for Amazon! I logged on to the internet and started searching and found it. I found it helped me walk in divine healing and gave some interesting insights. It's been a year and I was in perfect health for at least 5 months after reading it! So hey, buy, read, and apply and see if Jesus isn't the same yesterday, today and forever.

If you're just looking for a light sample of Brother Lake's messages, this is the book for you. However, if you'd like something more substantial, I highly recommend "John G. Lake: The Complete Collection of His Life Teachings" by Roberts Liardon (Compiler). For little more than what you'll pay for this, you can get a 1000+ page volume of nearly everything ever transcribed for or written by Brother Lake.
This book is a classic, however, it's touched so many, long before Liardon compiled his volume, and I prefer to have a copy in my library. You will, too.
