Even Wild Women Get the Blues...

You MUST read this book! Paul Doyle has written a fantastic book filled with adventure, humor and wit. He is very funny as he pokes fun at the dogma of political, spiritual and environmental correctness while he effectively underlines the values that dogma intended to support. He clearly loves the Pacific Northwest rainforest he describes in fine detail. No matter if you have been there or not you will see it in it's glory and feel the love and respect he has for the natural world. I loved Nioka. I wanted to be Nioka. And I must admit, I have always hoped that Bigfoot really exists and continues to elude capture.

Best book ever

Go out and buy it from Amazon.com. It's usually less than a dollar. It's about a woman who decides to take a break from modern society and relationships in order to clear her head and simplify her life. She takes off and "goes native" in the forest. The more time she spends there, the less need she has for human contact, materials, or even sustenance. There are other huge eco-issues and feminism statements repeated. Nioka meets Bigfoot :) and DB Cooper (see criminal airplane hijacker from 1971). Through the first half of the book, we see the woman as she is in the forest. Periodically, we digress a little in order to learn bits and pieces about her past, such as the motivations that eventually brought her to this point in life. In the second half, the character seems to grow into the forest, and changes into something beyond a typical human form. She is able to transform herself into light at will and can project herself into different places. Two thought provoking statements are made in the book. 1."Everything that ends with Z, begins with A again". 2. "Don't feed the crocodiles".

I wish there were more books out there by Paul Doyle. But this one's a fluke. It kinda looks like Doyle was simply an average business owner who decided to write a book, then created his own publishing company when he couldn't find any publishers to take on the book. I can't find any more information than a transcript of an interview with him dated from the early 90's.

I gotta give Doyle credit. This book is frickin brilliant! I think any publishing company had to have been crazy to not take this one on. It is REALLY good! More so, I gotta give him kudos for DIY-ing it and getting the book out there himself.

Very much like a Tom Robbins novel

Very much like a Tom Robbins novel. I love the writing style of Tom Robbins this novel is very much like that. I also had to wonder if I know him because Nioka and I had a somewhat parallel life ;-). Old hippies , Earth Mother, living in the woods of the great NW. No Nukes, protests and zen.
I think I will be waiting for the sequel and she really doesn't meet a Squatch in this one. Get the sequel out Paul! There is no Squatch porn in this sweet little story about a girl /woman who couldn't take the crazy human society. You're singing my song Paul!

BRETT N. STEENBARGER, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, where he also serves as the Director of Student Counseling. Dr. Steenbarger has published over fifty peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on topics related to brief therapy, including standard reference entries in The Psychologist's Desk Reference and the Encyclopedia of Psychotherapy. He teaches techniques of counseling and psychotherapy to graduate students in counseling, doctoral students in clinical psychology, and residents in psychiatry. Read this book!

This is a ridiculously good trading book. I should know; I’ve read well over a hundred of them. I’m very surprised it doesn’t have more than 4 stars. If you are a trader and you’re considering reading this book, do. I strongly recommend not even getting it at the library, but instead buy yourself a copy so that you can mark it up as you read. The author is a psychologist, and quite obviously a good one, and also a trader. By trader, I mean a real trader, not some guy that dabbles in the markets because he’s always had more money than he knows what to do with. And if him being a good psychologist and a real trader doesn’t make you want to read the book, then I can’t help you. I’ve read at least 3 other books by people that were both traders and psychologists and I got more from this author and enjoyed it more also. I’ve read another of his books also and I will be reading all of his books in due time.

An in-depth look at trading psychology

There are a lot of books these days about trading and trading psychology. It's great to have so much selection but it's getting harder to make a choice about which one's to read. I decided to let the reader's reviews guide me this time and they didn't steer me wrong.
I appreciated the way the author uses profound insights that he has gained as a trader and leveraged his experiences as a psychologist to create vivid examples. I found many of the ideas to be extremely useful and applicable to my methods and the writing style keeps the information very interesting.

a fascinating trip that will help you in all areas of life

The Psychology of Trading is one of those books where you will make a lot of discoveries about yourself and about your life, if you are paying attention, that all tie into trading.

Steebarger is a psychologist specializing in "brief therapy" and also an active trader. The book has chapters that discuss an in-depth story of a patient, and draw lessons from that story about life, cognition, and trading.

It is an awesome book. I have read Douglas and I have Ari Kiev's book which I will read one of these days, but I can't see how it can top Steenbarger's.

Steenbarger says that we have many personalities, and he shows you how you can identify which personality is doing what, and trigger the "Observer" in you, a part of you that is watching and that can see the truth of what you are doing and why you are doing it. This isn't as Zen as it sounds. And Steenbarger has technique after technique in each chapter, so it isn't a bunch of generalizations and observations.

The first technique (which I have done for some months now and read that Larry Connors and Linda Raschke also do and you probably do too) is to keep a detailed trading journal with your thoughts, feelings, what is happening, why you are taking a trade, etc.

The second technique is to excercise in the morning (he does stretching and some calisthenics) and then talk out loud and explain each of your trading plans. Something about talking out loud and explaining your plans lets your brain process differently and he says you can identify what is really good, find holes and see potential traps or things you haven't thought through.

I am on the fourth chapter and I just love this book.

Good summary and very helpful

This book is a good summary of genetics but one will need to read another book in conjunction with this one. It is great for quick reference and will suit students well as a study aid, as the authors give a set of key notes at the beginning of each chapter. The authors avoid any discussion of highly advanced topics, but instead emphasize the raw basics. However, they don't leave out some of the more exciting topics, such as population genetics, cloning, gene therapies, and the human genome project. The order of presentation is logical, with the properties of DNA beginning the book, with Mendel's laws explained based on the genetic code. In addition, this reductionist approach to explaining the biology of organisms is one that is most compatible with the requirements of sequence analysis and algorithms in computational biology. As such, this is a good set of notes for mathematicians who are moving into the area of sequence analysis and need a background in genetics.

The book is very usefull if you use it as reference, but it doesn't explain genetics in general in a complete way, and the fact that its pages are black and white is difficult to consider it a text book for a genetics course.. I would recomended to people who study genetics and know their material well to use it as a quick reference..

As the title suggests,this is not meant to be a textbook of genetics.The basic purpose of this book is to put across key points and concepts in a simple,concise fashion for easy understanding. This book is most useful if you already have some exposure to genetics through classes or more traditional texts.
The strength of this book lies in its clear,brief and logical presentation of topics with good cross referencing.It would be especially useful to students before examinations when reading through lengthy texts or notes is not practical

Interesting Perspective.... but Who is It Responding To?

There are two schools of thought about human rationality: the economics profession models humans as rational calculators, and the behavioral psychologists (in books like Predictably Irrational, Revised and Expanded Edition: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions) model humans as decidedly irrational. Both, say the authors of "The Rational Animal," are partly right and mostly wrong. To a large degree, humans do make decisions based on weighing costs and benefits, and humans do have many "blindspot" areas where their decisions are often less than rational.

But instead of asking whether we are or are not rational, these authors use evolutionary psychology to show that, given our evolved brains, many of the areas where humans look irrational exhibit a hidden rationality. So, several behavioral economic studies show that humans have a loss aversion: we value things higher when we are faced with losing what we possess than when gaining them for the first time. (In concrete terms, we will pay a lower cost to attain a thing than we would to give it up once we have it.)

The authors would respond to this above tendency as follows; we have several 'evolutionary selves' - mate attractor, survival expert, social networker, parent, etc - and each of these serves an evolutionary function and has slightly different preferences. So - and this is verified in studies the authors rehearse - when our 'mate attractor' self is primed (by having people look at pictures of attractive members of the opposite sex - we exhibit less risk aversion and are more aggressive in the amount of risk we often take. But when our 'parenting' selves are primed - by having people read stories about happy families - we become more 'conservative' in our riskiness behavior. (This, because in evolutionary terms, attracting mates often requires taking risks while raising successful offspring often requires more stability and less risk.)

So in this and other areas, some of our seemingly irrational tendencies have a deep rationality to them (those who raised successful offspring were less risky, and their loss aversion helped them survive. So, when we are loss averse, we are doing what made sense for our ancestors.)

Here is my big problem with this admittedly very interesting book. I am not sure the authors are saying anything that most economists (on the one side) and behavioral psychologists (on the other) would really object to. When economists model humans as wholly rational actors, it is WIDELY known among economists that this is a model valued for its simplicity, not its descriptive accuracy. (There are only a few more extreme economists who take this model as an accurate description.) And conversely, behavioral psychologists who say that many human behaviors are irrational, they mean irrational according to the standard of making the decision that makes the most rational sense given the context in which the decision is made. In fact, Dan Ariely's big selling book on why humans are often irrational is called "PREDICTABLY Irratioanl" and has a subtitle about what the 'hidden forces' (often, the evolutionary forces) that create those blind-spots in human rationality.

So, what this book does is gives us a good, plain-English survey of evolutionary psychology and how it helped shape current thought processes that often appear irrational (ironically, something similar to what Ariely does in the book these authors treat as a foil). What this book is not is an argument for anything new. The only reason it might seem novel is because the authors do not represent the present state of economics or behavioral psychology very accurately.

Still worth three stars for being really interesting, though.

It's a numbers game! Entertaining and Thought Provoking Read!

The Rational Animal really builds upon social psychology world that I was first exposed to when reading Robert Cialdini's "Influence." It really gets to the physiological reasons of why we do things, which after you get under the surface is incredibly simplistic. When it comes down to it, the core concepts of evolution drive many of our behaviors where we know it or not. The authors talk about these seven evolutionary motivations (Self-Protection, Disease Avoidance, Affiliation, Status, Mate Acquisition, Mate Retention, & Kin Care). After reading this book on a cross country flight, I came away both incredibly entertained, via the authors' colorful and edgy examples, and also a lot more knowledgeable about the world that we live in.

Some radical ideas and arguments

Rational Animal provides strong thoughtful counterpoints to many behavioural finance (BF) theories. It cheats, in a way, by redefining "rationality" that behavioural economists love to mock. However, its biggest achievement is in highlighting the BF theorists' tendencies of simply exposing the human idiosyncrasies without providing explanations.

Right at the start, the authors make a useful distinction between the proximate and ultimate causes behind our activities. Their idea - that the actions that appear illogical from the viewpoint of rationality involving only the causes and effects surrounding the action alone may still be explainable through evolutionary tendencies - is radical and well made. Clearly, the authors are proposing a different idea of "rationality" which is far removed from the textbook mathematical variety involving a handful of direct variables and one that tries to encompass the unfathomed evolutionary goals.

The book also introduces a good "selfs within self" or seven multiple personalities' model to explain our behavioural inconsistencies. That humans are not computers and even the same individual does not respond identically to the same circumstances at different points is known to all real life beings but not understood or accepted as logical by the theoreticians. The authors' model is a good attempt at providing some explanation behind this irrational oddity. The section is littered with some good new studies and results - like the modified Prisoners Dilemma experiments involving family members to show the role played by trust and genes in rationality.

Separately, there are good explanations for why we overestimate our own skills (ie, how over 90% of us possibly think we are above average in over 90% of things!). The explanation that they have evolutionary functioned as a defence mechanisms when faced with dangerous situations may appear stretched at first. However, the studies of intuitive biological/physical responses of our behaviour (raising of white blood cells while watching photos of sick people or a male testosterone rise around an ovulating female) show why our views of rationality need a modification to accommodate the subconscious, almost intuitive bodily responses shaped by our evolution. The point of overconfidence inducing the risk-taking and hence has an evolutionary bias is truly staggering.

The section involving examples of how people solve many BF study problems rationally when the problems are presented in the frequency form but fail when described in the probability form too has some radical departures. The BF economists have repeatedly shown how the solutions we reach to any problem depends on how the issue is framed (the frame dependence) to point to our irrationality. There is nothing new in this argument, but these authors provide some evolutionary twists: in the example of frequencies versus probabilities, they claim that the later is a new mathematical invention and not yet evolutionary natural like the former.

The short book almost runs out of any new points to make somewhere around the two-third mark and turns banal. The "his versus her" section is out of place, where most explanations and examples are pretty generic. The book discussions turn completely purposeless without new perspectives when the topic moves to the behaviour of the parasites to explain our consumption or even corporate behaviour. It all becomes a bit silly and preachy by the end when the authors begin to discuss how we can avoid someone peddling their wares while trying to act in our interest. The advises become as simple as sleep before you make a decision!

Let's face it, Ogilvy made great headway for the advertising industry. I'd even go as far as saying that his advertising methods are among the best the world has ever seen.

If you're new to the business, interested in the business, or even an old ad dog running out of tricks, you need to own this book. The best part about this book has got to be the visual references of some of the most successful ad campaigns since the dawn of advertising. If you don't take away some new ideas, you need to read it again.

Some of the techniques might be slightly outdated, but you shouldn't rely too heavily on one book for inspiration and information anyway. Also check out

Worth reading

So my boss recomended me to read this book, and told me everyone that works in the advertising business should know about mr. Ogilvy. And he is right, everybody should know who this man is, and I can see why he was so successful in his time. The core content in this book probably still applies, but this book was written in 1985, and I think we can all agree that the advertising business has evolved rapidly during this period. I would recomend all to read this just to know the history of this intelligent man, and I would recomend everybody to read this book if you are looking for an equally good book, with more updated information: Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: The Classic Guide to Creating Great Ads.

I just finished reading Unsaid Things, and it took me less than a day to finish the whole book (even going to classes) because I was so hooked. I've been a McFly fan for a while, and I fell in love with every single member of mcfly all over again. I started out laughing, and I then cried, and smiled. I now understand so many things, and I am so happy I read this book.

This book is incredibly entertaining, and a must read for all McFly fans. I finished it in two days, I couldn't put it down! It has all the inside info about the beginning stages of the band, which is pretty cool, as well as the guys' childhood stories. Lots of funny anecdotes and even some of their own personal struggles are documented in this book. Of course, it talks about the music and I found myself comforted and hopeful for what's to come in their future as a band and particularly about the direction of their next studio album, which promises to be a return to true McFly form... AKA AWESOME! McFly fans, you will absolutely love this.

I absolutely loved this book. I am someone who loses focus easily when reading so it usually takes a while to finish a book but I finished this book in about 2 days. I am from the US so I never really heard of McFly growing up but several months ago I discovered their music and fell in love. I had seen Tom Fletcher's viral videos before online but never looked into the band much until I was rewatching the Wedding Speech a couple months ago and was in tears because of how sweet it is. I decided to look up the band and then discovered their music. I had about 10+ years to catch up on so I bought a bunch of their songs, watched old videos and learned as much as I could. This book was the icing on the cake, it filled in all the gaps and then some! It is so well written, I was laughing and crying, and dreading getting to the end of the book because I didn't want it to be over (I really hope in a few more years they write another book of some sort). And I must say McFly has probably the most incredible story of how the band was formed. It was really a perfect storm of so many little moments that had to happen in order to create the McFly we know and love READ THIS BOOK!!!
