About the Author
Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

"At some point," Bill Peet once said, "it occurred to me that drawing was something I couldn’t possibly give up, and somehow it must be turned into a profession." He went on to not only fulfill his dream but to introduce generations of young readers to his delightful vision of humor, friendship and compassion.

A cute dragon story

Drufus gets lost from his terrifying dragon family and has to survive on his own. One morning he rescues a bug from a spider's web and he considers that he, like the spider, kills to eat. He decides to eat grass instead and grows into the largest dragon ever. A local king wants a dragon head to put on his wall to impress everyone, and he sends out his knights to find one. Fortunately there are no bones outside his cave since he eats grass, so the knights don't know he's there and they go right past. He is discovered by a boy who refuses to report the dragon to the king for a reward because the dragon hadn't harmed the boy's lamb.

Later Drufus gets injured in a storm and lands on that boy's property. The boy still refuses to tell the king and get the reward. He hides the dragon and helps him heal. The family is poor because the land is too full of rocks and they can't get them out. Drufus over hears this and decides to help them. He clears out the rocks and helps plow the land. The family comes to love the dragon and they work together to bring prosperity to the family.

One day the king finds out about the dragon and goes to get him. The family comes up with a solution that is surprising and funny.

Droofus doesn't really lose his head.

Sorry for that plot-spoiler. As you can see from the cover, Droofus is a cute dragon. He cuddles with lambs and doesn't... exactly do stuff that dragons are commonly associated with (like breathe fire, act menacing, you know...) Several knights don't quite get that, and attempt to put an abrupt end to Droofus, but they don't quite look hard enough for him, and ultimately a detente ensues once everyone realizes that Droofus isn't the menace they believed dragons to be. It teaches a child that snap judgments aren't always the smartest, and may result in someone being hurt. Bill Peet's books are classics with thoughtful messages and excellent illustrations.

Fantastic Fantasy Gaming. Highly recommended.

First rate guide to using the Hero System to run Fantasy campaigns. Michael Surbrook brings his usual in depth attention to detail to the elements of fantasy campaign and adventure design, and the Hero System lends itself beautifully to settings from grim Sword & Sorcery to epic High Fantasy.

The book includes a complete rules set along side sample monsters, characters, spells, loot, adventure seeds, etc. Old school style, with one book, a few fistfuls of six sided dice, and some paper and pencils, you can start playing. There are also a long list of other Hero System books to draw on as you build your campaign.

FHC uses the 6th edition Hero System rules, but is fully backwards compatible with earlier editions. You can find years of gaming between these covers. Highly recommended.

A contender for best single-volume RPG on the market today

All of the rules from Hero System 6th edition, condensed into a tome 1/4 the size. Yes, you sacrifice many of the examples and rare corner-case options for some of the powers, but in exchange you get a book focused on the Fantasy genre, but flexible enough to play any kind of game you might want. A contender for best single-volume RPG on the market today.

About the Author
Gary Robson is a tea blogger and owner of a tea bar in, of all places, a small town in Montana. He started out in the technology world and became a vocal advocate of closed captioning on television for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. In his endless quest to figure out what he's going to be when he grows up, he has been granted a couple of patents, teamed up with family members to start an electronics business and a software business, run a small newspaper and a bookstore, taught computer science, written 20 books about poop, raised some cattle, done a little standup comedy, put on seminars all over the country, given a TED (well ... Robert B. Cialdini is a well known and influential speaker who gives frequent speeches on The Power of Ethical Influence to such organizations as IBM, the Mayo Clinic, and NATO. He is currently Regents’ Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University, where he has also been named Graduate Distinguished Research Professor. He is past president of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. He attributes his longstanding interest in the intricacies of social influence to the fact that he was raised in an entirely Italian family, in a predominantly Polish neighborhood, in a historically German city (Milwaukee), in an otherwise rural state.

 

About the Author

Robert B. Cialdini is Regents’ Professor of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University, where he has also been named W. P. Carey Distinguished Professor of Marketing.  He has taught at Stanford University and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.  He has been elected president of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology.  He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award of the Society for Consumer Psychology, the Donald T. Campbell Award for Distinguished Contributions to Social Psychology, and the (inaugural) Peitho Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Science of Social Influence. 

            Dr. Cialdini attributes his interest in social influences to the fact that he was raised in an entirely Italian family, in a predominantly Polish neighborhood, in a historically German city (Milwaukee), in an otherwise rural state.

Good guide to the tactics of persuasion.

Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one.

Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here.

The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book.

I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication.

The only problems I see are that the textbook version (this one) has a better index in the editions I compared, so it makes a better reference tool and that the book is written from an American cultural perspective. That's fine, as most of his audience is American, but, and this is my M.A. in Int'l Relations talking, I wonder how well some of these tactics would be recieved by people from other cultural backgrounds. In particular, notions of authority (which constitute a chapter) vary widely. Just a heads up. This is still a "must read" for people who want to know how to persuade or protect themselves against other's persuasion.

Great book with ideas that anyone can benefit from.

This was a great book. I come from a technical background, and as most people know engineers are horrible at influencing others. But this book taught me a lot of simple ideas that are applicable in helping to motivate others to my point of view and also how to recognize when others are using these techniques and how to defend against them.

The book has 6 different concepts and it goes into the psychology of each (at a high level), some examples of it, and a few testimonials from readers. It was a quick read and held my attention throughout.

As a side note, in case you are comparing editions. The "Influence Science and Practice" seems to be the most recent version. The "Influence psychology of persuasion" book looks like the same book with an earlier copyright. Skimming through the chapters of both they look like the exact same text, so you probably don't need both.

Incredibly Influential, Powerful, and Useful!

"Influence" by Robert Cialdini is one of the most wonderful and influential books I've ever read! Other books have been written on the topic, but Cialdini's is the best and most influential of them all.

"Influence" deals with the study of persuasion, compliance, and change - a subject that has application for every area of life. Cialdini presents the latest research on influence in a compelling way, clearly stating the 6 principles of influence and providing wonderful illustrations of each principle from advertising, psychology and other fields. If we understood these 6 principles better, we would be less subject to manipulation from others (for example, the manipulation to buy things we don't need or to buy more than we need). We might, in turn, also be able to understand how to influence others for good.

The 6 principles of influence are:

1. The Rule of Reciprocation: "We should try to repay in kind what another person has provided us."

2. Commitment and Consistency: "Once we make a choice or take a stand, we will encounter personal and interpersonal pressures to behave consistently with that commitment."

3. Social Proof: "We determine what is correct by finding out what other people think is correct."

4. Liking: "We most prefer to say yes to the requests of people we know and like."

5. Authority - we have a deep-seated sense of duty to authority

6. Scarcity - something is more valuable when it is less available

I find that in my own life, these 6 principles are remarkably powerful and have the ability to explain a lot of the behavior I observe as a father, teacher, and priest. We would all benefit from memorizing and mastering these six principles. They are simple but extremely powerful. My daughter read this book when she was 14 or 15, and I had to wrestle with her to get it back because she loved it so much! I only hope she doesn't begin using the principles against me!

One of the best parts of the book is the wonderful examples of each principle that Cialdini provides. An experiment to demonstrate the principle of authority, conducted by Stanley Milgram, is the classic example. In this experiment, two volunteers show up to help with an experiment, purportedly to test the effect of punishment on learning and memory. A researcher in a lab coat with a clipboard explains the experiment to the volunteers and that one is to take the role of the Teacher, who will administer increasingly higher levels of electric shock to the other volunteer, the Learner. Every time the Learner got a question incorrect, the Teacher was to administer a higher level of shock. However, the real experiment was to test how willing the Teacher was to administer pain to the innocent Learner, who was not really another volunteer but an actor pretending to be in increasing stages of pain. The results shocked everyone, for Milgram discovered that about two-thirds of the subjects were willing to administer the highest level of electric shock. The reason? Their deep-seated duty to authority.

Influence is filled with many such fascinating and useful examples of how our lives are influenced by others. I highly recommend the book to all readers, for influence is something common to us all, for good or for evil.

An incredible collection I'll be reading again and again.

How have I been I sci-fi fan for 40 years and not discovered this guy? I'd forgotten how delightful and open-minded sci-fi could be before zombie-infested dystopia and the sad return of so many societal taboos to the PC age. Maybe that's why I am appreciating it at this point in my life. That Varley is an excellent writer made this collection even more of a pleasure.

It's too much to review all the stories, so I'll focus on the one with the same title as the book, Persistence of Vision. This story could keep a (very open-minded) book club busy for at least a year.

The very basic idea is communication without sight or hearing. The way Varley tells it is poignant and unabashed, and yes, it has a solid plot and developed characters. It wasn't lost on me that I was not seeing or hearing this story, and that even having to use words to be silently read was making it a bit harder for Varley to communicate everything. Also, after reading the section about the blind/deaf community, I went back and realized that every conversation in the book had related meaning; for example, the shrugs and grunts of the Navajo. Intrigued? Good.

Varley uses language beautifully; concise, symbolic, poetic. Here's an example from Persistence of Vision: "Orbiting atomic bombs twinkled in my mind, up there somewhere, ready to plant mushrooms when we'd exhausted all the possibilities." That's an awesome sentence just by itself, but when I realized how it ties into the rest of the story, my mind was blown!

Where should I start...

Powerful. Enjoyable. Thoughtful. Fascinating. Funny. Gifted. First-Rate. Original.
Nine stories that show us the future of man, with his flaws, his merits and his outward spread from Earth. John Varley thinks big also. In many of his stories it is pointed out that mankind was kicked off of the planet Earth by...somebody.
See, that is the best part. Many of the stories happen in a setting in which much of the background is unknown to us or just hinted at. But the heart of the stories are always people, their emotions and needs. Some sex too.
Many of the short stories were later used to create some very interesting movies.

Well worth seaching for

A friend recommended this to me, and amazingly my local used bookstore had a hardcover copy! These are some of the BEST short stories I have read! Right up there with Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. There is not one clinker in the bunch. Especially liked Phantom of Kansas, Hall of the Martian Kings, The Persistance of Vision. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank was quirky and fun. (I also saw a low-budget movie version on the Sci-Fi Channel) Air Raid seems to be a precursor to Millenium.

Good information, if you can find it.

It has good information in it, yes very good. But using this book as a reference to answer questions is HELL. Information is scattered everywhere. Typically, you'd search the index and go from there. But that NEVER gets you to the right information. It's always on some other page, where there is some other term being described. It's added as an aside, like, "X does Y, but remember C that we talked about earlier? C in relation to X and Y does Z.". It's infuriating to have to go on a wild goose chase on nearly every question that is given to me. The hardest part of taking a course should not be navigating through this labyrinth of a book. Write these books better, for the love of god write them better.

A great purchase!

The book came in great condition for a used book, far better than what I expected. There's no writing in the pages that I've noticed so far and there are no major markings on the cover. Definitely a good purchase.

Its a textbook. Confusing at times because the title reads "fundamentals", but you should know the fundamentals before getting into this. Good side notes in green text for making index cards.

About the Author

INAZO NITOBE was born in 1862 and began the study of English at the age of nine. He entered the Sapporo Agricultural College in 1877, and in 1883 Tokyo Imperial University. In the United States, he studied politics and international relations at Johns Hopkins University from 1884 to 1887. In Germany from 1887 to 1890, he studied at several universities, receiving a doctorate (the first of five) in agricultural economics.

As an educator, Nitobe first taught at Sapporo Agricultural College. Between 1903 and 1919, he held a professorship at Kyoto Imperial University, was headmaster of the First Higher School in Tokyo and then a professor at Tokyo Imperial University. He was also the first president of Tokyo Women's Christian University.

As a public servant, he was a colonial administrator in Taiwan from 1901 to 1903. In 1918 he attended the Versailles Peace Conference, then became the under-secretary of the League of Nations. He was a member of the House of Peers from 1926 to 1933, and from 1929 to 1933 chairman of the Institute of Pacific Relations.

While still at Tokyo Imperial University, Nitobe expressed a desire to become a bridge between East and West. He was on just such a mission, leading a Japanese delegation to an international conference in Canada, when he died in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1933.

best book on japanese mentality

there are numerous books published trying to describe the Japanese mentality. Books written by non-Japanese authors did not come close to Mr. Nitobe book Bushido. It is one of the best books written about the spirit of the Japanese mentality and ethics. Bushido is the source of Japanese ethics and tradition. I highly recommend this book, if you are seriously interested to learn about the Japanese mentality.

Our Reflection in a Katana Darkly

Bushido is a remarkable book that examines samurai culture and ideology through the prism of western history. As a fan of the various samurai periods, I was enthralled as Nitobe, an erudite multicultural Japanese social observer, dissected the mores, foibles and peccadilloes of both American and Japanese cultures from the ancients to the early 20th century dispelling myths and illuminating the most obscure and vilified traditions and rituals of the samurai. The narrative is as refined as a tea ceremony and cuts through prejudice and rhetoric like a razor sharp katana to reveal the beauty and discipline of the samurai.

Great Classic

In his book Bushido: The Soul of Japan, Naitobe presents to the Western world the peculiarites of Japanese culture as explained by the inherited spirit and virtues of Bushido. This is an easy read, which presents other ways of looking at certain virtues. It is a well formatted and sturdy book. I highly recommend it.

Essential recent LSAT preptest

This is the newest LSAT preptest, as of the time of this review (February 2015). The LSAT changes with time. You should definitely get the newest test, as new tests are the best indicator of what future tests will look like. Considering how important the LSAT is to your odds of admission, this book is well worth the price. You should also get the following books:

LSAT 73
LSAT 72
LSATs 62-71
LSATs 52-61
Optional: LSATs 29-38

Total cost is around $60-$70. There is no better investment you could make towards a better LSAT score. For more practice, get preptests 29-38. Note that only preptests 66-74 have two pages for logic games diagrams. Use only the second page for your diagrams. It is surprisingly easy to lose your train of thought when you have to move your eyes across multiple pages. This test also has a comparative reading passage. Every test from 52 onwards has comparative reading.
