Wisdom & Cunning

Prof. Poorvu shares a career's worth of development, investment, and advisory experience with his readers. I have read many books on real estate, but none have been as concise, savvy, and empowering as this one. Its reliance on 'back of the envelope' financial analysis and a more qualitative examination of the underlying cyclicality of real estate leaves the reader feeling surprisingly wise and shrewd upon completion. Rather than offering checklists, templates, and other tools like other books on the topic, this one cuts to the heart of the matter leaving readers w. a more complete understanding of real estate fundamentals.
I am fortunate to have had Prof. Poorvu in the classroom at HBS, but I think that all interested readers will share my sentiments upon completion of the book.

"Change is hard." "People hate change." Those were two of the most common quotes we heard when we began to study change.

But it occurred to us that if people hate change, they have a funny way of showing it. Every iPhone sold serves as counter-evidence. So does every text message sent, every corporate merger finalized, every aluminum can recycled. And we haven’t even mentioned the biggest changes: Getting married. Having kids. (If people hate change, then having a kid is an awfully dumb decision.)

It puzzled us--why do some huge changes, like marriage, come joyously, while some trivial changes, like submitting an expense report on time, meet fierce resistance?

We found the answer in the research of some brilliant psychologists who’d discovered that people have two separate “systems” in their brains—a rational system and an emotional system. The rational system is a thoughtful, logical planner. The emotional system is, well, emotional—and impulsive and instinctual.

When these two systems are in alignment, change can come quickly and easily (as when a dreamy-eyed couple gets married). When they’re not, change can be grueling (as anyone who has struggled with a diet can attest).

In those situations where change is hard, is it possible to align the two systems? Is it possible to overcome our internal "schizophrenia" about change? We believe it is.

In our research, we studied people trying to make difficult changes: People fighting to lose weight and keep it off. Managers trying to overhaul an entrenched bureaucracy. Activists combatting seemingly intractable problems such as child malnutrition. They succeeded--and, to our surprise, we found striking similarities in the strategies they used. They seemed to share a similar game plan. Several sticky insights

Chip and Dan Heath have once again summoned a lively writing style to present a series of compelling insights that make this book even more interesting as well as more valuable than its predecessor, Made to Stick. As they explain in the first chapter, "In this book, we argue that successful changes share a common pattern. They require the leader of change to do three things at once: To change someone's behavior, you've got to change that person's situation...[to cope with the fact that change] is hard because people wear themselves out. And that's the second surprise about change: What looks like laziness is often exhaustion...If you want people to change, you must provide crystal clear direction [because what] looks like resistance is often a lack of clarity." Throughout, the Heaths work within a narrative, best viewed as a "three-part framework," as they provide countless real-world (as opposed to hypothetical or theoretical] examples and - to their great credit - also provide a context or frame-of-reference for each.

Moreover, the Heaths invoke a few extended metaphors. The most important of these are the Rider (i.e. our rational side), the Elephant, (i.e. our emotional and instinctive side) and the Path (i.e. the surrounding environment in which change initiatives will be conducted). The challenge is to direct the Rider, motivate the Elephant, and shape the Path to make change more likely, "no matter what's happening with the Rider and Elephant...If you can do all three at once, dramatic change can happen even if you don't have lots of power or resources behind you."

Donald Berwick offers an excellent case in point. In 2004, in his position as a doctor and the CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), he had developed some ideas as to "how to save lives - massive numbers of lives" and his ideas were so well-supported by research that they were indisputable and yet "little was happening" until he spoke at a professional meeting and proposed six very specific interventions to save lives. Within two months, more than 1,000 hospitals had signed up. Eighteen months later, to the day (June 14, 2006) he had previously announced that he'd promised to return, he announced the results: "Hospitals enrolled in the 100,000 Lives Campaign have collectively prevented an estimated 122,300 avoidable deaths and, as importantly, have begun to institutionalize new standards of care that will continue to save lives and improve health outcomes into the future." He had directed his audience's Riders (i.e. hospital administrators), he had motivated his audience's Elephants by making them feel the compelling need for change, and he had shaped the Path by making it easier for the hospitals to embrace the change. The Heaths offer more than a dozen other prime examples (e.g. Jerry Sternin in Vietnam, the Five-Minute Room Rescue, "Fataki" in Tanzania) that also demonstrate how the same three-part framework resulted in the achievement of major changes elsewhere despite great difficulty.

Near the end of the book, the Heaths summarize the key points they have so thoroughly made while explaining to their reader how to make a switch. "For things to change, somebody somewhere has to start acting differently. Maybe it's you, maybe it's your team. Picture the person (or people). Each has an emotional Elephant side and a rational Rider side. You've got to reach both. And you've also got to clear the way for them to succeed." By now, the Heaths have explained how others have directed the Rider, motivated the Elephant, and shaped the Path. They conclude their book with a Q&A section during which they advise how to resolve twelve problems that people most often encounter as they fight for change. They suggest, and I agree, that this advice "won't make sense to anybody who hasn't read the book." The same can probably be said about much of what I have shared in this review.

Although, in my opinion, this is one of the most important business books published during the last several years, no commentary such as mine can do full justice to it. It simply must be read and read carefully, preferably then re-read carefully. Otherwise, it makes no sense to visit [...] to obtain additional information and assistance.

I offer my congratulations to Chip and Dan Heath on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

Switching "On" Your Emotional Intelligence

Switch is a compelling, story-driven narrative the Heaths use to bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can engage our emotions and reason to create real change.

The book is arranged around an analogy that illustrates the crux of emotional intelligence: when making a decision we are typically torn between our rational, logical reasons and our emotional, intuitive feelings. Chip and Dan ask us to imagine an Elephant and its Rider (the mahout). The Rider represents the rational and logical. Tell the Rider what to do, provide a good argument and the Rider will do it. The Elephant, on the other hand, represents our emotions, our gut response. If the Rider can direct the Elephant down a well-prepared path then there is a good chance for change. Otherwise, the massive elephant is bound to win.

The book is structured into three sections, each one suggesting specific behaviors you can follow:

I. Direct the Rider:
- Find the bright spots
- Script the critical moves
- Point to the destination

II. Motivate the Elephant:
- Find the feeling
- Shrink the Change;
- Grow your people

III. Shape the Path:
- Tweak the environment
- Build habits
- Rally the herd

On the whole, a worthwhile, rewarding read...

"Switch" oscillates between the citation of psychological research and the slightly-suspect relaying of 'inspirational anecdotes' (as is de rigeur for this genre), but is, on the whole, a worthwhile read. Coming across as a self-help version of Nudge, the authors wield an array of techniques to help people create change in their lives as painlessly as possible. In doing so, they indirectly provide an evidential basis for David Allen's "Next Action" mantra, as suggested in Getting Things Done, but their focus is neither on the "nuts and bolts" of organisational management (which can lead to meta-productivity fetishism, as many GTD converts are prone to), nor on the sort of "flying with the eagles" nonsense that keeps Anthony Robbins in a mansion in Hawaii. Instead, the authors try and strike a balance between social psychology and "change your life" blue sky thinking. For the most part, they succeed admirably, and their approach ends up leading them to more sensible suggestions than the interesting -but wacky- 59 Seconds which itself purports to be based on hard science (or, at least, as "hard science" as psychological research can be). For those who like their self help rooted strongly in scientific research, I would probably recommend this alongside Brain Rules, but own it's own, Switch is still a worthwhile addition to the burgeoning genre of self-help-based-on-academic-research genre.

Blade lives

Blade is an ultra rarity in the comic world. The only time he's ever really worked in comics is when Marv Wolfman created him in the 70's for the original Tomb of Dracula, yet the character has translated to a trilogy of films (ranging from excellent to average) with Wesley Snipes in the title role, and since then, a number of new Blade comics have been started; all of which winding up getting cancelled. Things appear to be different this time around, with promising screenwriter Marc Guggenheim (Wolverine) at the helm and Howard Chaykin (American Century, Bite Club) providing the artwork. Make no mistake that there's nothing bad at all about this new take on Blade, which finds the seemingly invincible vampire hunter doing what he does best, while flashbacks to his past are shown intermediately as well. As a whole, Guggenheim's story works, but the breakneck pace of his storytelling makes it easy to get lost in the action. There's appearances from Spider-Man, Dr. Doom, Wolverine, Morbius the Living Vampire, and even Dracula himself to boot as Blade runs afoul of vamps, body jumping demons, and even S.H.I.E.L.D. as well in the midst of the Civil War. Howard Chaykin's artwork however is the definite lowpoint of Undead Again, as the veteran writer/artist appears to be on somewhat of a downward slide, but hopefully, this isn't the case considering the body of work he has under his belt. All in all, there's nothing really special about this first TPB of the new Blade series, but considering what's come before it, this new take is quite refreshing.

Best Blade in years

I've read several different incarnations of Blade from the early 90's onward, and this series is by far the best. It combines the best aspects of the Blade character from the earlier comics with the best aspects from Wesley Snipes' screen portrayal to create the ultimate Blade. The storyline and dialogue are great, and there's plenty of suckhead killing action to satisfy fans of the films. I love the artwork as well, just be warned that the cover art looks completely different from the art inside, although both are awesome. I highly recommend buying this and Vol.2 to finish the series. It's a shame it only ran 12 issues. Overall, it's the best Blade in years and a great read.

BLADE the vampire hunter

This is one of the best stories I've read featuring the character Blade, but the action is kind of minimal. I had no idea Blade could be so versatile. He runs afoul of Dr. Doom, Wolverine and Spiderman himself and by the end of it all finds out who his real father is: a ruthless vampire named Cross. A nice sequence featuring Blade's mother giving birth and the now infamous Deacon Frost interrupting the birth to bite his mother.

Very good, but only buy it if you are a blade fan.

Let's answer the burning question straightaway: Steve Thomas believes that Patsy Ramsey is responsible for the death of her daughter, JonBenét, Christmas night 1996. As a key member of the team assigned to investigate the murder of the 6-year-old girl, the former detective knows the facts of the case as well as anyone, and the conclusion he draws is convincing and clearly presented. And, as it turns out, his theory about who may be guilty of the crime is just one of the shocking revelations in JonBenét: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation.

From the outset, it was a textbook example of how not to run an investigation: JonBenét's body was moved from where it was discovered before clues could be gathered, evidence was mishandled or removed altogether, the coroner failed to conduct routine procedures to determine time of death, and the crime scene was not sufficiently sealed off for hours after Patsy Ramsey's 911 call first summoned the police. In all, the initial response was inept, and it served to undermine the entire investigation; the utter lack of cooperation with the police on the part of John and Patsy Ramsey then compounded the difficulties. Within hours of the murder, the Ramseys had their own team of high-priced lawyers, who effectively insulated them from any direct contact with detectives. Nearly four months passed before police were able to question the parents at length, and only then on the condition that the Ramseys be given full access to police reports and evidence prior to the meeting. In essence, they behaved like suspects, and when Thomas and other detectives tried to determine the Ramseys' guilt or innocence, they were stymied every step of the way by Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter and those under his direction.

The hostile relationship between the police and the D.A.'s office slowed the investigation to a crawl, and, in Thomas's eyes, proved the principal reason an arrest was never made. Despite copious evidence against them and glaring inconsistencies in their testimonies, particularly Patsy's, the Ramseys were not even officially listed as prime suspects until March 1998 because the D.A. would not permit it. All the while, Thomas alleges, Hunter was leaking sensitive information to tabloid journalists and allowing the Ramseys' lawyers to dictate the direction and scope of the investigation. Thomas eventually resigned from the police department after exposing the D.A.'s mismanagement of the case, and a grand jury was called. But the grand jury investigation was ultimately undermined by the D.A.'s refusal to hear the testimony of several detectives closest to the case.

Somewhere in the midst of the politics, the legal wrangling, and the in-fighting between the D.A. and the police department, the central focus of this case was lost: justice for an innocent 6-year-old girl. Steve Thomas has returned that fact to the fore in this important book. --Shawn Carkonen

Steve Thomas received more than a hundred commendations and awards during his thirteen-year police career, including the Award of Excellence and the Medal for Lifesaving, for assignments ranging from recruit training and SWAT to special investigations and undercover narcotics. An excellent account of the total screw-ups in this case

An excellent account of the total screw-ups in this case. What a shame!!! I believe that crimes committed by celebrities/the wealthy (e.g. OJ Simpson, etc.) seem to get botched by the authorities that are enamored by the celebrity involved. No justice was served here nor in OJ's case. Sad, sad, sad. . .

Lost my interest with his opinion

I understand the author had a viewpoint, and used this book to allow his readers to hear it. Yet, there was underneath the message, a determination to have his opinion be the only opinion that matteted in this case. That was dusturbing to me. It felt very personal. He lost his way in my opinion, and my interest by this distraction. He might be wrong, he might be tight.

Fascinating read

This book is an exhaustive behind-the-scenes look at the Ramsey case ... Very interesting to read the detective's point of view and feel his frustration. So many times while reading it I said out loud, to no one in particular, "no way!!" But the twists and turns, roadblocks and sabotage kept right on happening. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to stop. It is compelling. I plan to read it again just to pick up on the unbelievable details that I might have missed.

Misleading and low-quality.

I was pretty excited about picking up this cookbook, as I love my Instant Pot. It was low-priced, and advertised itself for two, and I was putting together an order and it 'fit' my budget, so I didn't read much about it after I saw it had good reviews.

When I received the cookbook, I was very disappointed. First, the quality of the book is poor. It's a basic paperback, and all of the recipes look like they were typed into Microsoft Word. There are no pictures, no discussions of the recipes. Just the name, the settings, the ingredients, and a very brief set of instructions.

In addition, the recipes are NOT for two people. A Pot Roast recipe that calls for a 3-lb roast? A rib recipe that calls for 5 pounds of baby back ribs? A 4-lb pork butt for pulled pork? No, these are just normal recipes, with no scaling to be for two at all.

And a final insult, the Sesame Chicken on the cover of the cookbook isn't even a recipe in the book itself!

You would do better looking up recipes online, this cookbook is barely functional and very misleading.

I would not recommend buying this book

I eagerly ordered this cook as scaling recipes down to two is at times challenging. I received the book yesterday. I found that all the recipes are for more than two, most for four but some for 6 or more. What's with the misleading book title? Then the cover looked interesting but not to be found in the book. Another misleading aspect. Finally some of the recipies are missing steps. I would not recommend buying this book

It's okay, and probably has some great recipes, but I am certainly disappointed. I was hoping for recipes for 2 people, like it states in the book title. Every recipe in here is for 4 or more servings.

Una faceta muy personal del famoso periodista

Esta es una compilación de cartas que el periodista Jorge Ramos escribe a sus hijos Paola y Nicolás para asegurarse de decirles lo mucho que los quiere y lo que cree que realmente es importante en la vida. Quien esté buscando algo más (chismes, historias sobre otros aspectos de su vida privada) seguramente quedará desilusionado porque no lo va a encontrar.

Las cartas conmueven por su honestidad y sencillez, pero sobre todo por su calidez. Como el mismo autor menciona, son "...un testimonio del amor por mis hijos. Es una forma de gritar que los quiero. Y quiero que lo sepan." Y uno se sorprende al constatar que la vida y los sentimientos (los miedos y las alegrías) de un "famoso" no son tan diferentes de las nuestras. El libro es también una especie de ejercicio de Ramos para conectarse con sus emociones o, como él mismo dice, para "descongelarse emocionalmente". Es una ojeada a lo que piensa y siente el comentarista de noticias que siempre procura mantener sus opiniones y sentimientos al margen de las noticias que transmite todos los días, como se supone que lo haga un profesional. Es, digamos, la mitad privada del hombre público.

Cuenta, entre otras muchas cosas, cómo cambió su perspectiva de la vida el día que estuvo a punto de tener un accidente. Cuenta lo feliz y seguro que se sentía en su casa del Distrito Federal. Lo que significa ser "de dos lugares" y un "padre de lejos". El amor por su padre y por su hijo. Lo que aprendió en las guerras. Las ventajas y desventajas que le da su nariz. Los libros que lo han marcado. Lo que cree y lo que no cree. Y lo que para él es más importante en la vida. Pero todas estas narraciones son, antes que nada, para sus hijos y me parece que es aquí precisamente donde radica el valor del libro, que toca fibras muy íntimas de cualquier persona que tenga hijos (y que sea inmigrante). El libro no es pretencioso; no da lecciones de nada. Uno puede tomar lo que le sea más úitl y dejar pasar lo demás. Sí es entretenido, fluido, tierno.

En pocas palabras, este libro está lleno de dos cosas: amor y sinceridad. Algo que no se encuentra en muchos libros, y que agradezco mucho a su autor.
