About the Author
Andrew Erickson is a registered professional engineer in the State of Minnesota and research fellow at St. Anthony Falls Laboratory working on projects related to assessment and maintenance of stormwater treatment practices, developing of new stormwater treatment technologies, and modeling stormwater treatment practices. Peter Weiss is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Valparaiso University and a registered professional engineer in the state of Indiana. His research interests include the construction and maintenance costs of stormwater treatment practices and optimizing stormwater treatment practice performance. He has acted as a consultant for the City of Valparaiso, Indiana to assess the performance of stormwater management practices within the city. John Gulliver is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota and a registered professional engineer. He has run a successful stormwater treatment research program in collaboration with colleagues for over 10 years.

Written under the threat of Boethius's impending execution, the work comes on the cusp between the classical and medieval worlds. In alternating prose and verse, Boethius spins a dialog concerning the harsh vicissitudes of fortune and the lasting happiness provided by the life of the mind. Slavitt's prose translation is accessible and makes frequent use of colloquialisms. His poetic translations—too often paraphrased in earlier editions—are not weighed down with attempted fidelities to ancient meter and use contemporary forms to evoke the gravity and grace of the original. While the book does include a brief biographical and textual introduction by Seth Lerer (English & comparative literature, Stanford Univ.), its lack of textual apparatus makes this edition less than ideal for students. It's a remarkable book (though a short one), and its latest edition, rendered into fluid, compellingly immediate English by veteran translator David R. Slavitt, is very markedly the best one it's ever had...Slavitt presents the reader with Boethius brought to vibrant, vigorous life, to a degree that makes all previous English versions seem pedantic and irrelevant. Harvard University Press has crafted a physically beautiful volume, sturdy and small enough to fit in your pocket--an extremely fitting format for a book that's meant to be a comfort against life's ills. Reading this edition, even readers who've never encountered Boethius before will see at once why his book has meant so much to so many people for the last 1,500 years. Short, Beautiful and Profound!

This book inspired Dante and many others for centuries. Written in prison by a person of great intellect and fortune, until he met with treachery and died in AD 524, he questions his Fate. It is a Theodicy, but it is presented as a conversation between the prisoner and Lady Philosophy. Boethius questions everything, but finds all the answers. It is a shame that such a beautiful (and short) work of art, with such profound, clear thinking is not required in all colleges. Even high school! I had to wait until after I graduated to be exposed to such rich ideas, rich vocabulary, and profound thought. It is a shame. The analogy of the Wheel of Fortune was made popular by this book and there is so much wisdom in Lady Philosophy. I can't tell you how much I loved this book for challenging me to reflect on philosophy on many levels, to a degree that not many books force. The insight gained by understanding this book is immense and influences my thoughts today.

A worthy edition of a worthy book

I begin my comments with two disclaimers: (1) I would not presume to "review" Boethius, but I can offer a few superficial comments on this edition which may be of use to potential buyers; and (2) I do not know Latin, but can read Boethius only in translation.

There were many passages in this translation that I recognized as being definitely idiomatically modern. Those passages felt anachronistic to me and made me doubt to some extent that I was reading "the real thing", at least as much as one can ever read "the real thing" in translation. On the whole, though, allowing for that one not insignificant complaint, I recommend this translation for its fine, clear style.

The evident modernity of the translation made me want to read some other translation, so that when I was finished with this one, then just for something different, I chose Chaucer's Middle English translation, "Boece". I could not have successfully read "The Consolation of Philosophy" for the first time in Middle English, but I can read it in M.E. the second time. I am still chipping away at that, but so far Chaucer's translation seems distinctly more emotional to me than Slavitt's, and thus conveys a very different feeling. Maybe Chaucer and Slavitt have both impressed the emotional styles of their own ages onto the text? But how would I ever know? In any case, if the style of Slavitt's translation made me at once mostly happy, and yet needing to read another, then that is a sign of success for the translation.

As for Lerer's introduction, and also the physical quality of the book, I second the favorable comments of another reviewer, Mr. Allen Shull; see his review.

Excellent Book

This is an excellent book to keep by the bedside, in order to glean some wisdom before sleep or when one has a bit of free time. In some ways, this book is to Greek philosophy what the Bhagavad Gita is to Indian philosophy. It summarizes and reconciles various streams of Greek philosophical thought with each other and with the concept of divinity and presents them not only as abstract philosophy (as later Western philosophy would evolve) but as praxis- as knowledge meant to be acted upon. The Consolation of Philosophy is thus a work that turns philosophy into religion. It is an interesting read and inspiration, especially if you are looking for something beyond the usual spirituality titles and its rationality is refreshing.

EXCELLENT!!!

Som and Curtin did it again. This is a great textbook. The bible of Head and Neck Radiology. The subject is complete and even includes PET/CT Imaging. The drawings and the images are beautiful. Every radiologist, neuroradiologist and ENT surgeon should have a copy of this book.

No problem with getting the two volumes

I just recieved my two volume set without the issues that everyone else was talking about. Maybe they've done something to address it. I would order without hesitation. As far as the books themselves, if you are ordering them I'm sure you know what you are buying. This set is the industry standard for head and neck imaging.

Update: After spending a few months with this textbook, I've decided it is the perfect reference textbook. The images and discussion are exhaustive. The chapters proceed logically from embryology, to anatomy, to atlas-type frame by frame images, to pathology (rich with imaging examples). I look forward to the release of the expert consult Brain by Dr. Naidich.

About the Author
Culadasa (John Yates, PhD), is the director of Dharma Treasure Buddhist Sangha in Tucson, Arizona and was a teacher of physiology and neuroscience. He has been ordained as an Upasaka (dedicated lay-practitioner) and has received ordination in the International Order of Buddhist ministers in Rosemead, California. He lives in Pearce, Arizona. Matthew Immergut, PhD is an associate professor of sociology. He is a longtime meditator and a dedicated student of Culadasa. He lives in Woodstock, New York. Jeremy Graves is a student of Culadasa and has accumulated roughly a year-and-a-half of extended retreat time under his teacher’s mentorship. His approach to Buddhist practice combines the insights of science, art, and devotional practice. He lives in Laguna Beach, California.

The most brilliant book about meditation ever written!

I have never met Culadasa or anyone associated with him. I have practiced meditation for at least several years in each of seven different traditions, including every major wing of Buddhism except Tibetan. "The Mind Illuminated" is the most brilliant book about meditation ever written, in any language, in any century. There is absolutely no Asian religion stuff, although crucial traditional meditation technical terms are referenced and explained when helpful. Straight up meditation, western style, everything carefully and consistently explained in psychological terms that are only a little more sophisticated than everyday English useage. It is a big book because of such detailed explanations, not because it is complex or digressive. Nice bite size chapters, beautifully organized. The choice of Bhavanakrama as the structure for his discourse is technically marvelous. Regular meditation practice is a huge life commitment of your time that you must weigh carefully, so this book is also most suitable for those thinking of beginning practice. If I had read this book forty-five years ago, I would never have bothered with ten trips to India, Nepal, and Thailand. Some years ago in retirement I considered that I was fully cooked with meditation, but with this book I am inspired to begin again, and now I am an old hermit having a blast. I have shelves of books on this topic, but this one is the best. I have practiced my way through 60% of the book, and I am still amazed at its conciseness and solutions to major technical problems identified in traditional texts, particularly the Lankavatara Sutra.
Everyone until now learns meditation by going to a meditation retreat for that purpose. This is the first satisfactory book that can replace retreats for learning meditation. Not because of the 'Stage' chapters that tell you what to do in meditation, but because of the 'Interlude' chapters that explain what is happening in the mind at each stage. The explanatory line drawings are very clever and helpful. Culadasa's professional experience as a neuroscientist drives away all the mystery and mysticism usually associated with meditation, and you feel more in personal control of your experience.
Few who have gone to meditation retreats repeat the experience. Most 'meditation retreats' have a serious religious and cultic agenda that is a turnoff for many. Mind control and recruitment is always an issue, as well as group hypnosis, although actively denied. I have attended 20 retreats of a week or longer.
Secondly, I warn you of what the retreats do not: Progress in meditation depends on your unwinding and private review of your inventory of personal memories while sitting in meditation. Such unplanned memory events recur throughout your practice until you successfully integrate each presented memory. Next time, it is usually a different memory. However, beginning meditators are surprised at the clarity and emotional impact of these memories, and these memories are most frequent when the practice first gains traction. Meditation is par excellence self-therapy, but definitely not for those who wish to avoid recalling unpleasant past experiences. In a league of its own

The subtitle here, “A Complete Meditation Guide,” understates this astonishing book's comprehensiveness and profundity by half. This is a 475 page long magnum opus that's exponentially more useful than all of the previous guides to meditation I've read (and I've read plenty, having been involved in Buddhist study and practice since the early 1970's).

For a newcomer to meditation this book is the best possible introduction as well as a lifelong companion. For someone with an established practice, be it in the Theravadin, Tibetan or Zen tradition (or for that matter secular mindfulness or non-Buddhist contemplative approaches) The MInd Illuminated is a treasure trove of encouragement and clarification of key points in practice that no other book I'm aware of addresses. It comes as close as any book possibly can to having not just a teacher but a living meditation master with personal experience of every step of the path into your home.

While grounded in decades of obviously very serious and intensive practice and study of Buddhism this book uses the absolute minimum number of foreign words and defines them precisely. Someone with a purely secular interest in meditation will have no problem with the content, while devoted adherents of particular contemplative paths will feel supported. The tone throughout is kind, warm, clear and encouraging.

Anyone who's practiced meditation for years knows that motivation for practice often waxes and wanes, and that it's all-too-easy to run into dead ends that seem impossible to overcome, to stagnate in one's practice, or to stop sitting altogether out of frustration or fear. Culadasa anticipates all of this, starting with a chapter titled “Establishing a Practice” that in and of itself is worth the price of the book, and following up with dozens of pith instructions that seem to address even the subtlest mistakes in practice, obviously born from a combination of deep realization and extensive experience coaching meditators ranging from beginner to very advanced.

My only regret about this book is that it wasn't published decades ago!

This book is the best instruction book on buddhistic meditation I have read since Daniel Ingram's `mastering the core teachings of the buddha'. However, Culadasa's book lacks the controversy surrounding the latter one. His book does not really deal with Buddhist orthodoxy but is a very precise and motivating manual how to meditate and how to achieve the higher meditation states that have been described over and over again in the oldest Buddhist literature (Pali canon and Visuddhimagga). These achievements are well-known within the Theravada literature and modern practice and can be achieved by proper practice (never withstanding the popular new wave/zen light misconception that the practice doesn't really matter and that there is nothing to be accomplished). I have never read a better and to-the-point manual how to start a dedicated meditation practice and how to actually do any relevant meditation exercise in a way that it leads to results. The book is extremely good in combining classical meditation instructions with the right mind set for motivation and positive reinforcement of the practice. If one has a decent background in some meditation discipline and some knowledge of the maps of what might happen with dedicated practice, then this book is in my opinion the only book one needs, together with actually doing the practice, to really get started and get a long way to achieve certain states and insights that can result from meditation. This is the one and only Dharma book you want to take to an inhabited island for a long time.

In 1922 an Irish-American adventurer named Robert Flaherty made a film about Inuit life in the Arctic. Nanook of the North featured a mythical Eskimo hunter who lived in an igloo with his family in a frozen Eden. Nanook’s story captured the world’s imagination.

By focusing primarily on one family, she humanizes what has been called one of the worst human rights violations in Canadian history. Through meticulous research and interviews, McGrath embraces actual events and the greater question of white reliance on misconceptions concerning indigenous peoples. She opens with the 1920s filming of Nanook of the North, then pursues connections the filmmaker had to one Inuit family. Disappearance of first nation people: the Inuits in Canada.

This is a riveting account of the oppression, mistreatment, and near annihilation of the Inuit forced to live in the Northern Artic regions most recently in the 1950s forward. What the book makes clear is that this pattern of taking over aboriginal people is long and truly harsh. Ross Gibson, who was put in charge of the forced movement to the uninhabitable Ellesmore and other "islands" was not aware, but the history of forcing Inuit people from their homeland began in 1576 with Martin Frobisher, Captain of the Gabriel, whose men tried to lure the natives on board, then took one prisoner all the way back to England, where his gravesites still remains.
There was no informed consent; the Inuits were told they were going to a better place, where they would have free reign, land of their own, rich hunting and fishing. What they gave up were their minimal government payments, simple medical assessment, occasional handouts of food. One of the gravest dangers when the while "colonists" explored other nations is the sharing of viruses: untreated tuberculosis, measles, unattended births - no one was trained to help deliver babies who were never warm enough and who rarely had protein, which they needed to survive.
The conference meant to symbolize apology from the Canadian government, which took place in 1993, found only a handful of survivors in attendance. Some spoke angrily of their losses; others sat listening to more promises, which have never been fulfilled. I have read this type of story before and yet, this account of the Inuit exile is most heart-breaking.

Riveting and heartbreaking all at once.

This is a fascinating and heart-breaking story of how the Canadian government moved a group of Inuit out of their homeland to a place in the farthest reaches of human tolerance for cold, darkness, and starvation. It's a revealing look down the long tunnel of greed as the Canadian government move the Inuit so they can take over their lands and harvest the fur-bearing animals there. The story reminded me that in such a climate a small problem can become a catastrophic one. Example: Often when husbands are gone hunting or trapping, nursing mothers must go foraging for wood and food. If the men are gone for weeks at a time, these supplies run out and Mom and baby can die of starvation and hypothermia. The book also reminded me that we have seen this story before within our own borders. Who knew the Canadian Government was just as arrogant and greedy as that in the U.S.?

The story takes care not to beg the issues of the Inuit; evenso, the reader still finds him/herself caring about the Inuit and their mistreatment at the hands of people whose primary motivation is money. It follows a real family through four generations. Yes it's the same old story of what happens to indigenous people on every continent, every island and in even the most cold and remote corners of the world. It led me to wonder, why is this story always the same? Why do the aborigines always get the shaft? And since I am one, the answer stings. This book looks at all the players, and all the pressures that nearly wiped out the indigenious people who lived along the edge of Hudson Bay. There is an ending of hope, however. But I'm not holding my breath.

I would recommend this book if you're interested in this kind of story. It's very well done.

Masterful recounting of a story that needed to be told

The story of the Inuit of Inukjuak and their forcible removal to Ellesmere Island is one of suffering, endurance, and ultimately, vindication and triumph. It is told with compassion and conviction by Melanie McGrath. The reviewers in both Booklist and Publishers Weekly used the word “riveting” to describe this narrative. The Long Exile is a masterful recounting of a story that needed to be told. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

In 2009 Weta Workshop created a world so uncannily realistic that the special effects (in addition to an undeniably poignant plot) helped a low-budget film with an unknown cast become a blockbuster hit. Movie-goes, bloggers, and critics could not stop talking about Neill Blomkamp's first feature film, District 9, the newest alien movie that has raised the bar for science fiction thrillers in the new century.

Weta Workshop's artists created the special make-up effects, physical characteristics, alien weaponry, props, armor, custom vehicles and spaceships that were all stylized in a foreign yet familiar graphic language that defined the film's distinctive alien aesthetic. About the Author

Daniel Falconer has been a designer at Weta Workshop for more than a decade, producing conceptual art as part of the design team on many of the company's high profile projects, including The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the short-lived Halo movie adaptation. Daniel wrote and collated Weta's first two books, The World of Kong (Simon & Schuster, 2005) and The Crafting of Narnia (HarperOne, 2008), art books that showcased the illustrative work of the entire design departments behind on King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia movies, and has provided descriptive copy for movie-based toys and collectibles including The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. He lives in Wellington with his wife Catherine and two daughters, reveling in his dream career of playing in imaginary worlds every day.

It has more than what you saw in the film

[[VIDEOID:mo294YS8BLHEIOZ]]Weta Workshop is a brand that's synonymous with quality creative work. The Art of District 9 is another testament to the amazing work they do, on top of what they have already done - Avatar, Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia.

The Art of District 9 is a 160-page hardcover. This book actually cost a few dollars less than typical art books of this size. This is a fantastic bargain.

The book is filled with concept art. Most of the things you see are in their various stages of development, from the idea to the final designs. There are lots of iterations for character designs, the aliens, props, weapons, the mothership and many other stuff. All the visuals in the book are in high resolution with great detail.

What you see in the film is actually a small part of what's presented in the book. You can see a discarded concepts like crazy Organ Retriever which can harvest organs at the press of a button (I suppose), and then there's the variation of the exo suit which was designed to the stage where a life-size model was created and then dropped - I can't even begin to imagine how it feels like to have work at that stage of completion thrown out. And there are a few impressive mothership designs which weren't used as well.

Other than the illustrated art, there are also lots of pictures on the sculpts created. What impresses me are the weapon designs. They look really good, and they are printed really big, and there are lots of them.

Lead conceptual designer Greg Broadmore, creature designer David Meng, Neill Blomkamp and other artists provide good insight into the conceptualization process with their commentary.

This is one of the better art books for 2010.

I might have peed a little

I'll keep this short since there are 15 other 5 star reviews, but this is a model for what all other "art of" books should be. Complete design evolution of characters and weapons, along with photos of final Weta props. The book even shows a lot of the graphic design: everything from the alien language to the human corporations. So many awesome. Buy! Buy buy buy!

A must have if you loved the production design of the film or if you are a sci-fi/fantasy artist looking for inspiration.
Unbelievable photos and reproductions of District 9's concept art.
Destined to be a highly sought-after collectible book.
