The book describes optimal sequence of types of efforts (exercises) in a workout, in a weekly cycle of workouts and in longer periods, and explains physiological basis for these arrangements. It covers all effective methods of developing any physical ability, skill or mental ability and it tells how and when to change the training loads, how to make training plans for any period of time (single workout, week, month, year, several years).

You will learn, during a day and during a workout, when the best time is for technical, speed, strength, endurance, or flexibility exercises; when during a week should you do a given type of a workout; when and how much should you work on any ability or skill during an annual training plan.

The examples, illustrating the principles of training and the methods of controlling it, are taken from sports with which most people are familiar (track and field, swimming, boxing, wrestling, gymnastics, and ball games). Furthermore, these examples are presented in such a way as to make it easy to apply the conclusions to any other sport. For example, the indicators of boxer's good or bad form described in this book apply equally to taekwon-do fighters or kick-boxers. The methods of controlling the training process described in this book do not require complicated equipment or technicians to make this information applicable in training.

Kurz, author of Stretching Scientifically (Stadion, 1987), presents a manual of East European training principles to elite athletes of the West. His nine chapters give an excellent overview of training for the development of speed, strength, flexibility, psychological preparation, recovery, and the testing and monitoring of skills. His text is logically organized and well indexed, but the prose contains some awkward phrasing and missing articles and would have benefited from additional illustrations. Kurz does not cover the basic exercise physiology or the fundamentals of physical training that Jack H. Wilmore does in Athletic Training and Physical Fitness (Allyn & Ba con, 1977), nor does he specify training regimens for individual sports. Still, this unique title is recommended for collec tions in physical education, coaching, and athletic training in academic and large public libraries.

Great book to complement the knowledge of any sports discipline!

This book is not a standalone book, meaning it won't adequately teach you to prepare for a particular sport; a runner won't be taught step by step to prepare to run their fastest times; they'd need a book dedicated to sprinting or distance running for that. However, this book is full of gold that will strongly complement any book dedicated to a single discipline. The principles defined and discussed in this book is applicable to all sports, whether strength, power, or endurance-oriented. Following the principles and guidelines in this book, along with adequate preparatory know-how for their particular discipline, will prepare an athlete to achieve optimal levels of athleticism in a SAFE, EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT, and HEALTHY, HEALTHY way.

Cataloging several examples for each of ten regular shapes, Greene develops in an ever-changing rhyme scheme the premise that all shapes are made from bent lines. It's an eye-opening insight for readers, but confusing when blocks are considered square, a bubble, marble, and ``curled kitten'' are included in the list of circles, and ``star'' is defined as ``the shape of a fish.'' Readers may also falter at the triangle spread, since the three blocks of text are placed so that it's hard to tell in what order they're to be read; the ``tent built just for you'' has a triangular opening, but what children will notice is the diamond- shaped side. Kaczman's picture-book debut features a set of stylized, evenly colored, very simply drawn scenes, sometimes viewed from playfully skewed angles or featuring sight gags--a police officer chowing down on a doughnut, a kilted man playing hopscotch. Still, an instructional intent hangs heavy over this, and the examples are not always on target; a better book on the topic is Dayle Ann Dodds's The Shape of Things (1994). I teach 3rd grade and purchased this book to introduce geometry. It really seems to interest the students. I had originally borrowed the book from a friend who teaches Learning Support, and she found it to be useful for introducing geometry.

This book is lively and fun with great illustrations and wonderful rhyming words. I purchased it to help teach elementary school children about two of the elements of art: line and shape. It did the job very well and has so many examples in the course of the poetry that it is one of the books you can easily read over and over.

In an industy where hundreds of childrens books are introduced almost every month, this one impressively stands out among all the other casualties for content and especially illustration. This is a rare case where illustration style and story does not try to partonize parents and their children nor does it come across as an over-intellectualized wanna-be childrens book. I can't wait to have children so I can read and reread this book to them.

Solid Abridgment, Suitable for Children

I'm a bit of an "Thousand Nights" enthusiast -- I enjoy the stories immensely and I have four separate translations in my personal library. Several friends have asked me to discuss the differences between the editions, so I thought I'd present a four-way comparison and then talk about which version is best for which audience.

For the purposes of the four-way comparison, I will draw text from the opening tale of the two kingly brothers in order to highlight how each popular version handles "adult" content and racial content.

-- The Tale of King Shahryar and of his Brother, King Shahzaman --
Now there were in the King's palace certain windows that looked on to the garden, and, as King Shahzaman leaned there and looked out, the door of the palace opened and twenty women slaves with twenty men slaves came from it; and the wife of the King, his brother, was among them and walked there in all her bright beauty. When they came to the pool of a fountain they all undressed and mingled one with another. Suddenly, on the King's wife crying: 'O Masud! Ya Masud!', a gigantic negro ran towards her, embraced her, and, turning her upon her back, enjoyed her. At this signal, all the other men slaves did the same with the women and they continued thus a long while, not ceasing their kisses and embraces and goings in and the like until the approach of dawn.

Then they all paired off, each with each: but the Queen, who was left alone, presently cried out in a loud voice, "Here to me, O my lord Saeed!" and then sprang with a drop leap from one of the trees a big slobbering blackamoor with rolling eyes which showed the whites, a truly hideous sight. He walked boldly up to her and threw his arms round her neck while she embraced him as warmly; then he bussed her and winding his legs round hers, as a button loop clasps a button, he threw her and enjoyed her.

For my money, the superior volume by far is the Madrus & Mathers edition. The editor and translator have deliberately worked the translation to be as readable to the English eye as possible, even making judicious choices about where to refrain from using diacritical points (single quote sound points, as in 'ain) in order to ease the reading experience. They've made a concerted effort to retain the adult content without being lewd, the racial content without descending into offensive caricature, the poetic content without overwhelming the reader, and the entire content without condensing the text and losing material. The Madrus & Mathers editions comprise four giant volumes, but the casual enthusiast will be more than satisfied with just volume one, and with over 600 pages of stories in the electronic edition, the reader will have plenty of reading material available.

For children, however, the superior volume is probably the Muhsin al-Musawi edition. This edition is condensed, but the editing was done with great care to maintain story structure and content. The adult content has been toned down considerably, the racial content has been handled tactfully, the extra songs and poems have been almost entirely removed, and there are interesting and attractive pictures in the electronic edition. My biggest complain here is that the adult content has been excised to a degree that almost brings unfortunate implications: when adultery is characterized as "conversing", the angry and jilted husband seems to be seriously over-reacting. Still, if you want a sanitized version of the tales, the al-Musawi edition is almost certainly the way to go.

I do not recommend the Lang edition. Lang's fairy tale collections, such as the color fairy tale books, are usually a delight, but his Arabian Nights edition is thin on content and heavily paraphrased. The stories are gutted to remove the adult content and shorten the tale length for children, but in many cases the changes are not carefully glossed over, and huge plot holes and unresolved threads are left dangling. I've never met a Lang reader who didn't ask me what was going on in one tale or other because the translation is so poorly rendered.

Neither do I recommend the Burton version. If anything, the Burton version has the exact opposite problems as the Lang version: Burton's edition lengthens the stories with extensively lewd descriptions and offensive racial imagery. The edition was also rendered in the 1800s, and the language within has not aged well -- there are all lot of "forsooth"s and "verily"s that bog down the reading. If you're interested in a historical analysis of how these tales have been rendered over the years, by all means become familiar with the Burton version, but if you're just looking for light bedtime reading, give the Burton edition a pass.

I hope that this comparison will be helpful. This particular listing here is for the al-Musawi edition which I recommend for children.

About the Author

David Sumpter is a professor of applied mathematics at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he runs the Collective Behavior Research Group. Originally from London, he studied his Ph.D. in mathematics at Manchester and held academic research positions at both Oxford and Cambridge. This is his first book. He lives with his wife and two children. In his spare time, he trains a successful soccer team of nine-year-old boys. He lives in Uppsala, Sweden.

Science friendly

Great book! As someone who works on public health-epidemiology I'm used to statistical models, this book illustrate how soccer can be use as means of explaining this models as well as how it can enrich research in all areas. Is good in math and soccer level, is great to give you insights, particulary if you do research in any area or if you like soccer and wanna get into the somewhat cryptic math of its statistics in order to filter the bs from media expert. If you what you are looking for is "magic bullet" book for gambling, this won't be case.

Good to see it is not only the players having adventures in soccer!!

Very enjoyable read with a range of good information on the game and mathematical approaches to analysing parts of it. Of particular interest was the cross pollination of research into animals with football. The book was broken up into easily digestible chunks that held the interest from start to finish and were not overly academic in nature. The layers within each chunk were built up sequentially and left one thinking that one knew something of the process, the maths involved and the utility of the work at the end of the chunk.Interspersed with good elements of humility and humour I found it well written for the layman (me) and the depth there for budding mathematicians, football managers and researchers. Worth the cost of purchase for me. Looking forward to seeing more from this author.

Quick read, interesting concepts

I definitely liked the premise of the book, applying mathematic techniques to analyze soccer, and the author presented his work in an approachable manner. While I think the math presented was simple enough, I could have handled more and wish the book was a little more in depth.

About the Author
Award-winning Tennessee sculptor Lundy Cupp never knew he could carve anything until picking up a pocketknife at age 47. But the former criminal fraud investigator and bounty hunter made a major life change, and now pursues his art as a full time career. a wonderful, dark and funny experiment in urban fantasy

Man... what a weird book. Like, a genuinely strange series of words arranged in a weird order to create a story unlike most. And I say that with happiness, not judgment.

Hellmaw is an urban fantasy, reimagined, and tossed on its head in a dark and imaginative way. I think the closest comparison I could make would be to Hellblazer (Or Constantine, the movie made about Hellblazer) or perhaps Neil Gaiman's American Gods.

In short; Hellmaw presents us with a world filled with strange and wondrous creatures that are just beyond the corners of our eyes, and they've been here for a very long time, indeed. The primary characters of this novel are demons. Evil, straight from what passes for hell in this universe. They are not good in any sense we would want to ascribe to them, but they are complex and interesting, and have full and... rich lives. When they speak, they feel alien, and when they interact with the unknowing (or rarely, knowing) humans they live among, it feels like a stranger trying to pretend like he's part of the group.

Ed Greenwood came to success with TSR then Wizards of the Coast, developing their deep and rich Forgotten Realms world. He's written nearly thirty novels set in that world, and if you've read them, Hellmaw: Your World is Doomed will feel like a strange conversation with a close friend. Unnerving and bizarre, but familiar and enticing all the same. I will say that there are more than one scene in the book that raised my hackles due to... otherwordly desires, and they felt a little out of place to me as I listened to them. I was still entertained, but the scenes of demonic, carnal lust are exactly that. Not for the squeamish, let's say.

Charles Constant's narration is entertaining and fluid, especially in the scenes that feature the demons. Have I mentioned there are people in this book too? They just didn't matter as much as the demons, and I'm okay with that. I'll have to take a breather from the Hellmaw series, as I found it to be intense, but a little searching about showed me that there were a few more titles out there written by other authors, and that seems like a premise I'd like to investigate.

Hellmaw: Your World is Doomed is a wonderful, dark and funny experiment in urban fantasy that I think many would love, and many would run away from, terrified. I don't think that's a bad thing though. Sometimes being a little scared is a very good thing indeed.

I wasn't sure who to cheer for, and that was cool!

Hellmaw: Your World is Doomed! Probaly isn’t something I would have picked up off a shelf. It’s not quite the sort of book I normally go after, but I have been trying to expand my reading tastes, so diving into Hellmaw made sense. As such, it’s hard to really compare it to other books of its like I’ve read, because I haven’t read anything quite like this. It isn’t fair to compare it to other genres where I am more widely read, because this doesn’t fit into any of those categories. This is my disclaimer. I’m going to do my best to review this neutrally, but if my tastes are a bit colored by other genres I’m more “into”, I apologize. So take this with a grain of salt.

To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t completely sure who I should be rooting for in this novel. Clearly, as a human, I was more intrigued with the human characters, and I sympathized with them better than the daemons. But I did find the daemons intriguing, even though much of how you see them is through the humans’ eyes, and they’re so foreign that they come off as, well, demonic (or daemonic). Aum, Jult, Shame, and the other daemons would have been so easy to detest due to the simple fact they’re not human, and they see us clearly as no more than a food source. But what’s the real issue underlying this novel: the human/daemon disjoint or the daemon war? Would one be better if the other wasn’t an issue? This really isn’t addressed, but I really got to thinking after I finished the novel. Who are the real bad guys, all daemons (simply by dint of being what they are) or one side of them? And if the latter, which side? It’s sort of enjoyable to think about. In truth, I think I’ve gotten more out of this book after reading it, just pondering, than I did while actually reading it.

There’s some good entertainment value to this book, especially if you’re into adult content. It wasn’t overly graphic, but there is some… well, some daemons can turn into tentacle monsters or shapeshift in other ways. I’ll put it that way. The narrative and plot are very raw at points, but if you look at it as top-of-the-foodchain sentients doing what they will to their livestock… yeah, that doesn’t make it any better. Humans are, as is a repeated theme, cattle. We are cattle, and the daemons behave as though we are such.

Did I enjoy this book? Sure. Will I pick up the next in line? Sure, why not. Will I be going nuts and waiting with bated breath for it? Not really, but I am curious to see what happens to the humans. Especially Nast. I didn’t like any of the humans more than the others, but some developments toward the end made Nast’s storyline much more intriguing to me, so I’ll come back for him if for nothing else.

This is the first book to be published by the newly created publishing group TEGG - The Ed Greenwood Group. The book is terrifying and dark, but compelling. Once I read the first chapter, I was hooked. I couldn't put it down. Warning: this is NOTHING like his Tor books or the Realms. It's frank, raw, and new...but still Ed. A must read.
